Hi
we recently bought and installed a Time Capsule 3TB, and it worked great for a month. The wi-fi covered the whole house. As of yesterday, we can only get the wi-fi signal when we are in same room as the Time Capsule! There are ZERO BARS anywhere else in the house.
Help! What could have happened? what can we do?

Power off every device on the entire network...in any order that you want
Wait a few minutes
Power up the modem first and let it run a full minute by itself
Power up the Time Capsule next the same way
Keep powering up devices one at a time the same way
Check the network
I did it, and recovered a bit of the lost range/coverage. I can now connect on the staircase, but still not in the downstairs room where I had connected with no problem ever since I had installed the Time Capsule.
There must be some other issue.

OK, I just changed it to just channel 11 instead of automatic and now it works!
Be prepared to change that channel again since other networks around you are constantly changing channels. So, what may be a good channel today might not be a good channel tomorrow. Too many wireless networks....not enough channels to support them.

But it also shows the auto channel selection doesn't actually work properly as it is supposed to avoid this situation.. so if you keep to one channel it is not worse than auto channels not working. Plus you might scare off some other wireless routers when they test channel 11 and find something already using it.
"Automatic" has always worked well for me, but I cannot explain why. Maybe it actually works for me.
I don't check the router that often, but it does seem to always be on a different channel. One day it might 3, another 9, another 6 another 11. I just leave it alone.
But, I do understand that manual channels does work better for some users....and would not suggest that a user who is having success with a manual method should switch to Automatic.
Now I have another problem. If I set the TC manually on Channel 11, I get broad wi-fi coverage of the entire house, but the internet is painfully slow (much slower than a week ago). If I set it back to automatic, the internet speeds up dramatically (always setting itself on Channel 1 or 6), but the range drops back to about half the house.
Neither outcome is satisfactory.
