The percentable of one value to another is the ratio.

B as a percentage of C is B divided by C so...

638 divided by 731 is

638 / 731 = 0.87278

D8=B8/C8

to enter this in a cell select the cell D8 then type "=B8/C8" then enter

If you want the percent increase of one value compared to another:

percent increase of B to C then it would be:

(B-C) / C

to enter in cell D8 type "=(B8-C8)/C8" then hit enter

An increase of any non-zero amount from zero is tecnically undefined as a percentage increase because:

new = 1

old = 0

(new - old) / old -> (1 - 0) / 0 -> 1 / 0 which is undefined. because ANYTHING divided by zero is undefined. Therefore I do not see how you can say the increase is 1500% or any particular number. Can you show the numbers you are using and how?

"It does not matter about this one row. In the whole of this department I can use the total in each column to get my percent."

Correct.

There's no way to calculate or state the increase of a new budget item where the previous cost of that item was non-existent. But the overall increase to the previous year's total budget can be calculated (and the increase to the total budget because of that single new item can be calculated) using the formula supplied by Wayne.

Nice to see an User uploaded file moment when it arrives! 🙂

Hi Kaff,

An Increase of 1500 (or any number) on zero is infinity. Not a good idea to report that your expenditure increased by an infinite amount!

What you **can** report is the % increase in the overall town spending (or the overall spending of that department), partly due to an additional expenditure of 1500 on salary for a Health Officer.
