I am a Mountain Lion victim that was running Java 6 so I could use 32bit Chrome and Java. I've tried looking for these files on my system so I can delete them or update them, but they don't seem to be there. Does anyone know where they would be in 10.8.2?
On the coretypes.bundle you have to right click and show package contents. Hope this helps.

I'm having a probelm saving the edited file.
I go to
/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta.p list
and right click "get info" there I change permission so everyone can read and write it.
I right click again and open it in text edit.
After I make the changes I click save and it says "document XProtect.meta.plist cannot be saved"
Can't figure what I'm doing wrong.
Go to the root of coreservices, alter the permissions on that and then click the arrow to propogate that through all contained folders & files.
You could use Pico through Terminal:
sudo pico /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta. plist
Do so at your own risk.
You don't have to mess with the permissions this way.
Thanks, that did the trick.
I changed the permissions, edited and saved XProtect.meta.plist then changed permissions back.
I assume I should keep "Automatically update safe downloads list" in SECURITY disabled.
Maybe someone will write a script to do all this so those who don't like to tinker can get their Java back.
Thanks again to everyone for helping me get running again.
Will you repost this terminal command? Seems like something is missing at the end.
Thanks!
Try this, think its because the line wrapped over.
sudo pico /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta.plist
You can edit the file safely without touching permissions. Just comment out the blocks that refer to Java, or even delete them.
This alone is not a permanent solution, as the file is reverted when the system reboots.
Hoepfully Apple and Oracle will reach a solution soon...
Thanks, I appreciate the info. What I'm looking for is a way to use Remote Desktop to send a terminal command to a bunch of computers that will edit this file and make the changes necessary, so I don't have to touch a couple hundred computers to fix them. I'm with a district, and our online grading program uses java for its gradebook app. With this security issue thanks to Java, Apple disabling Java, and mid-terms upon us, I have a bunch of stressed out teachers wanting to know why they can't update their grades today. So, to streamline this process would save me a lot of headaches.
I can't find the lines to change. I'm using TextWrangler w/ command line tools enabled, logged in as root and none of these Keys or strings show up in my search. Tried it w/ text edit and it wasn't found as well. Thanks for the help
Unfortunately while this restores Java on Safari, it breaks the ability to have an attachment in Mac Mail. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong?
Is my machine in really big trouble if there is NO Core Systems folder??
Also, does it make a difference wether I'm running Safari or Firefox (cause it sure isn't working in either of them)
You're looking for CoreServices. Macintosh HD-->System-->Library-->CoreServices.
And, no it doesn't make a difference. Java is disabled in both browsers.
Are you planning to edit the file, or delete it?
I found a fix here - http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/80590/how-can-i-circumvent-xprotect-and -re-enable-java-applets - the third one down helped me most. now trying to find a way to distribute it - PowerTeacher must work or things will burn!!
This is why I said to use the command line. It is just easier to find the file since it is part of a bundle.
