I just spoke to an applecare advisor and he said that it is possible to downgrade a new mac that came with Mountain Lion, but that they were not allowed to tell me how to do it.
Does anybody have any info on this topic?

According to a brody's list (thanks, noondaywitch!), if you do have a 17", you can only run Lion:

Even my current early 2011 is an i7.
It has Intel/Radeon graphics but by the time you get into mid 2012 they have NVIDIA GeForce GT cards. Of course it is possible that there are other differences in the build that may prevent even a machine with Intel/Radeon form running SL.
I was blisfully unaware of the impending doom when I bought this computer and would have been mightlyly p***** off had it not taken the downgrade because my previous machine had been knocked about and was held together with string and chewing gum.
I would be very, very surprised if anyone could install 10.6.8 on a 2012 MBP. I think that the late 2011 MBPs had very slight upgrades in the CPUs and GPUs which still allow for 10.6 to run. The only reason I am still using Lion is simply to discover the differences (note I do not say improvements) with Snow Leopard.
