I have restored from clones two ways:
1) boot from the clone and clone the clone back to the primary HD using CCC. This works "OK" but you need to make sure your recovery partition is cloned recorrectly. CCC has a disk utility tool to check that the recovery partition exists on the external drive.
2) Install a fresh copy of ML from a USB and do a migration from the clone for all programs and user settings.
It can be hard to do version 2 without a USB copy of the installation software. I don't know if the new mac come with that or not.
Right, I see what you mean now.
I booted off of my external hard drive which contained the clone. I then loaded up CCC and was able to pick the external hard drive as the source and the destination as Macintosh HD. I didn't proceed past this point but I can see now how I would get my system up and running again off of a clone.
Thanks for the help everyone, really appreciate it 🙂
