Retina highlight/ dead pixels issues

Hi

I have recently started to see highlight (dead) pixels on my MBP retina display. I thought these are dead pixels so I went to the Apple store to get it fixed.

It turns out that these are not dead pixels but actually tiny dents on the thin glass cover that might have happen from small particles on the keyboard or the surface around it.

According to the guys in the Apple store a few people came with the same issue but we where told that this is not covered by warranty as it's a damage caused by the user!

This is a big concern and should be investigated by Apple. does this mean that we need to keep the keyboard and surrounding area completely clean each time before we close the lid? It never happened on any of my laptops in 15 years.

If you see something that looks like a dead pixels try to scrape the the glass with your nail. If it feels like there is something on the glass like a small bump then it's not a dead pixel but a tiny dent on the glass and Apple won't fix it under warranty.

This makes the MBP Retina a product a very fragile product so think twice before you buy one.

Cheers,

Thanks for your quick answer.

This is not a scratch and even Apple support said that it's becoming a wide spread issue. more and more people are coming to the store to complain about dead pixels when it's actually tiny dents. The combination of a tiny pixels and thin glass craters for this issues to happen. Why else do people by laptops if not to close the lid?

I don't suggest to eat your lunch on it but to expect dust proof cleaning each time before closing the lid is not the solution.

Did you get a Samsung? I mean, are you having any image retention problems? I have the issue with a tiny dent in my screen but I'm worried that I'll swap a dead pixel for an image retention problem and be stuck in forever returning LG screens until I finally get a Samsung that works again :S

This all *****... it kind of makes me regret getting an rMBP 😟

I just got back from the apple store. The guy immediately agreed to replace the screen under my apple care and promised that we would check if there would still be image retention issues with the new one in the store and that they'd swap it again if there were. He also claimed that while he'd seen issues early on, he hadn't seen any problems for the past few months.

I got a new samsung screen and they ran an image retention test in the store with me and everything checked out fine. So I just want to give a big shoutout to apple for being super cool about this and to tell others with the same worries as me to just go there and talk to them. The problem I guess with looking at stuff online is that you mostly only see people writing that have had bad experiences... so here's to also reporting when you have a good one!
