iPhone 4s keeps restarting itself after shutdown/battery draining quick/no sound after restart/ iOS 6.1

I bought my first iPhone 4S thirteen months ago (Jan 2012). After upgrading iOS to 6.01 and now 6.1 I have discovered some strange and nasty behaviours.

The first noticeable thing is the iPhone restarts itself after every shutdown and don't play any sound at all (no sound when using the keyboard, no sound from music app) and no sound control with external buttons. But the ring sound function is working normaly !

I have cleaned the connector with a toothbrush but I think dust into the connector is not the cause of malfuncionning in my case.

After 3 to 5 minutes, the sound function is back again without doing anything !

The only way the iPhone stay off after shutdown is when it's plugged on a power source with a computer or a charger.

And the last noticeable effect after iOS updating is the fast battery draining, 1 per cent every 2 or 3 minutes, even when the phone is supposed to be on sleep mode. Last night i left the iPhone sleeping with 100% charge in Airplane mode and six hours after i found the battery was at 80% !

It seems the iPhone don't sleep at all and some processes are always running in the background even if they shouldn't. I can confirm this checking the usage stats, finding that standby time is very closed to the usage time (few minutes less for usage).

I made many tests and four restore procedures, including restoring the iPhone as new in two opportunities. No solution at all !

Now, i am using my iPhone 4S in a very conservative way, as i have to turn OFF the 3G, GPS, WIFI, Exchange and iCloud funtions to be able to use the phone basic functions during a working day !

In conclusion, i think we (because many iPhone 4S users are concerned) are facing :

- a defective hardware

and/or

- a buggy iOS 6.01 or 6.1

In all cases, APPLE is responsible for fixing this situation.

I pledge firstly for a one year extension of warranty period and the launching of an exchange program.

I think we (iPhone 4S users) also need a technical assessment to know what are exactly the buggs inside iOS 6 that produce such battery draining.

I hope APPLE will communicate soon on these matters !

Best regards

Denis

I have the exact issues as you with my iPhone 4S. I solved my battery drain problem by cutting off the cellular data and only using wireless. Now the battery behaves as normal. This did not resolve my problem of the phone never cutting off unless plugged in. I believe it's a hardware issue and apple needs to recall the phone.

I have dealt with the same problem described here. Could not turn off my iphone 4S, it kept restarting. I had no sound controls for youtube, music, etc. No sound for new mail, new messages. After a while, randomly, the sound came back, but the battery was depleting quickly, even had 50 percent down after one night.

My problems started after my iphone 4s had fallen on a hard surface.

So I read a bunch of forums and everyone that had this problem took their's iPhones to geniuses and Apple stores and received a new iPhone. But that was not applying to me because i have no warranty anymore to my 4S.

So... i kept reading and found a topic that gave me an ideea: change the charging connector. I attached the picture of it. It's not that expensive. I even bought one charging connector, followed a tutorial on youtube and change it my self!

I had bought a used iphone 4 about 3 weeks ago. It was unlocked and happened to be jailbroken.

After about 3 weeks of blissful use, there were several vertical white lines that appeared, then my phone turned off. I had to force a restart but then it would keep turning off.

  • I did a back up to my laptop, including pictures. I then attempted the most recent update which wasn't able to complete, then it listed an error message. I'm sure this was due to being jail broken. I went through the steps to have my phone go through a "recovery mode" update. (This step removed all of the jailbroken items such as videos, apps and whatever else I wasn't using.)
  • I then restored my phone from my last update. The phone continued to restart but the vertical line issue went away. My phone then started to restart continuously through the night. *Note: Set up an alternative alarm clock, just in case. I'm glad I did.
  • Today I made a "Genius Bar" appointment online via my store's reservation option. (DO THIS.) My Genius Grant B. (Ridgedale, Minnetonka, MN) said he'd seen this before and it was probably due to a software issue or in the worst case, a video card issue.
  • Option 1: For the software issue, since I had gone through the recovery steps as well as backed up my information at home, he advised that he could do a more thourough wipe of the iphone, then reload the software. They're able to do a deeper cleaning of the phone then we're capable of with itunes. This was free and took 5-15 minutes to complete. So far so good.
  • Option 2: If it's the video card, they have a trade in option for a factory restored iphone 4 for around $150 that comes with a 90 warranty. I would strongly recommend this option as opposed to dealing with another 2 year contract. (My family looked into the prepaid voice and data and changed our bill from $170 a month down to only $65 with two phones.)

I hope this helps some or most of you with this super frustrating issue. Good luck!

My iPhone 4s 32GB (17 months old) has started behaving exactly like MacThijs'. Additional fact: often the volume issue is solved if I change language settings! When rebooted from home-button power-button, often the volume goes off. Change language settings, and volume comes on. Then, one may revert to favorite language, I guess (I don't, because I alternate between two versions of Portuguese -- Portugal, and Brazil). You may try this as a temporary "solution". I wonder if other people have experienced the same.

If so, this cannot be (only?) a hardware issue. Too much of a coincidence that this happens when upgrading the iOS. Perhaps 6.1.4 will fix it, I hope so.

The solution from Twil21be worked for me.

I changed the dock connector (not really easy, but absolutely doable) and that completely solved the sound/battery problems.

Only downside is that I now have intermittent problems that people don't hear me when I call; probably a connector that I didn't fit back completely correct. There are more people who have this problem and can probably also be solved.

Yes! For those who still have the problem, the charging port/connector may be the culprit, associated with some event like the phone's detecting that it is receiving some charge. It occurred to me to insert the iPhone in a Mophie battery pack that I use sometimes, and so far the iPhone works fine: it turns on and off normally, and volume buttons work. In fact, I am charging the iPhone from the wall outlet now via the Mophie battery. So, if you people have a battery pack, give it a try. Perhaps this works even with an old or almost discharged battery pack. It is not a solution, as Apple should take care of the fact that it's just not right that many iPhones start to experience this problem. If the problem has to do with a combination of hardware and events (battery charge), an iOS upgrade should be able to fix it. I ask Apple to work on the issue before many users proceed to repair or exchange their iPhones unnecessarily.

I will keep the iPhone docked in the battery pack, and I will post again.

I used to have the same exact problem. I went to Apple store in Ginza, Japan today, and unexpectedly they changed my broken phone with a new one in less than 5 minutes. They said it's a hardware failure. I still have my warranty so they didn't charge me anything. If I don't have any more warranty, it would cost around 16.000yen ($160)

I'm sorry if this doesn't help but good luck 🙂
