help viewer crashes

I updated my desktop system last night, going from Lion (10.7.5) to Mountain Lion (10.8.2).


Since then, Help Viewer (and helpd) have been completely non-functional. Every time I launch Help Viewer, I get a pop-up window showing that helpd has crashes. I'm not having any other issues at all - everything else seems to work fine.


I've reviewed numerous examples of how to resolve this problem, including clearing all caches, resetting the help viewer by removing the related plist files and caches, checking all internet plug-ins, removing old & unused Safari extensions, etc.


Still, every time I launch Help Viewer, I get a crash report from helpd and the Help Viewer tells me it has no content to show.


I do not want to re-install the OS unless there is absolutely no other way to resolve this issue.


I would appreciate any suggestions or feedback.

First, try reinstalling OS X 10.8.2 > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1581 Then, see if Help Viewer works

Hi Linc -


Already tried this without success. I just finished re-installing the OS as mende1 suggested.


Seems that I my startup disk needed repairs and the re-install failed the first time. It's funny how the installer did not tell me that the first time when I was updating to Mountain Lion.


I repaired my disk, then ran the installer from the Recovery Console, and I am back up. I don't know if the helpd problem is gone. I'll have to wait and see.


I'm hoping this handled it.

OK - I did a successful re-install and I'm still having this problem.


Before I have to wipe the drive, do a fresh install, then transfer data from my backup, do you or anyone else have any suggestions?


This is, in my opinion, completely crazy that I should have to do this. Lion was working just fine - this is a collosal PITA. Is this a demonstration of how great Mountain Lion is? If so, I'm not very impressed.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:


☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)


☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.


☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.


Step 1


Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.


Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.


When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.


Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.


Step 2


Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

I sincerely hope this gives you enough information to figure out what's happening. At least after the re-install, helpd is not crashing constantly. Now it crashes only when I select Help from the Finder menu. I still want it fixed, but at least I can work.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.


This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.


Step 1


The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.


Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”


While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.


Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?


After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.


*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.


Step 2


The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.


Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:


  • Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
  • When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
  • If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.


Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.


The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.


*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.


Test while in safe mode. Same problem?


After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

OK - I've done part 1 - booted into the Guest Account. Did I have the same problem - yes and no. I was able to open the Help Viewer without a notice about helpd crashing, however I still had no content in the Help Viewer and when I searched for "Safari" I got no results.


As far as booting into Safe Mode, I'm on my second attempt and have so far not been able to successfully login that way. When you said "much slower" did you mean up to 15-30 minutes to boot? So far, my first attempt took 15 minutes before I just powered down my Mac. Now I'm on the second attempt and the progress bar is about 1/4 of the way through and is not moving. Is this normal?


Please advise...

OK - here's the status as of this morning.


Is the process helpd running? yes, although it did crash in the middle of the night (same type as before), but returns after a restart.


Can I boot into Safe Mode? No - same result as before. I booted into Recovery mode and checked my boot drive - it shows as having no errors.


Is it any better than before? I would probably say "yes", although I will have to keep an eye on this.


DId this fix the problem? At this point, I would have to say that the jury's still out.


I hope that, as I clean out my system of old stuff, this will get better. At least I've done everything short of wiping the drive again, then re-installing all of my applications.

OK - so here's an update.


The process helpd is still crashing and the crash log looks pretty much the same. The system overall seems pretty responsive and have not had any other problems.


This is not interfering with my ability to work since it only happens when I launch certain applications (for example, Skype).


Since I can't boot into Safe Mode, I'm open to other ways to check 3rd party add-ons. Where else can I look to see them and temporarily disable them?
