as it turns out, there were a few things wrong..

first the "host name" in Mail settings was wrong.. was listed as mydomain.com, as opposed to mail.mydomain.com

Past that.... my IP address was blacklisted by smamhaus.org.... and i was able to un-blacklist it on their site.

There is also the issue of the "helo" message the mail server was sending out... which was rejeted by some servers... but changing the "host name" solved the problem.

Setting up a mail server has become much more difficult over the years.... and so this has been a real learning experience for me.

Let me know if you have any questions... I'll do my best to help ou solve them.

One thing I would do for sure is upgrade your RAM. 512 is barely enough to run OSX, and while it may have been ok, it's possible that that is part of your problem. When there is not enough RAM, files have to be written to the HD, and accessed from the HD, which takes a lot longer than reading and writing from RAM.

As far as to why it seems unresponsive... I'm not sure. How many users do you have? Have you looked at the CPU usage in Server Admin? It could be a good place to start. See if the spikes in the CPU usage happens when your under your e-mail blackout, and then see what is causing the CPU usage to spike.

I doubt this is going to be much help.. but it's the best i've got for now.

This didn't last long as the problem came back. But I think I did just find the problem. One of my Linksys Switches just died and it could have been causing all kinds of network traffic issues???

The switch itself was not showing signs of trouble but the WAN port on my router kept blinking red which means collisions. After a little trouble shooting I found that removing the switch from the network cleard the red light.

I've had the switch removed for several days now with no issues with my email. KNOCK ON WOOD 🙂

Thanks, Tom
