And then what? What is that supposed to mean? Did you open the back and inspect for swollen or leaking caps? Your replies need to be a bit more informative. I'm trying to help but I'm almost ready to give up on you.
Opened it up, there are a few cylinders that appear to have a crust on the tops of them, some look like they are bulging a bit on the top...what does that mean? If its dead, is it possible to get the files off of the hard drive and transfer them to an external drive? If so, how do I do that?
That means it's probably toast and not worth repairing, unless you want to have someone replace all the caps, not just the obviously bad ones. And the caps in the power supply might also be bad.
It's easy to get the drive out. You would put it in an external enclosure.

Thanks for the help. Do you have any idea what it would cost to have it fixed? Just curious, ball park figure?
I'm not really current on this. I used to know of a few places that would do these repairs. Maybe these two are still in business. No idea about price. Contact them.
If you had some sophisticated soldering skills and the right equipment you could do it yourself by getting a caps kit from Jim Warholic. But you really need some experience before trying.
In additon, the graphics chip on these is known to go bad, so I don't think it's worth pursuing these repairs ony to have that happen.
