Podcasts.app grouping all files with Media Kind manually set to podcast together?

I have a bunch of audio lectures that I want iTunes to treat as podcasts, so that I can listen to them through the Podcasts app on my iPhone 5. I prefer the interface of the Podcasts app over the Music app for lecture listening, especially with the feature of playback continuing where it left off, so this is important to me.

Setting Media Kind in iTunes to podcast works fine for the first 'album' that I try, but as soon as I do it to files from a second album, the Podcasts app on my iPhone merges them into the first 'album' / podcast. iTunes on my Mac does keep the new podcasts separate, but as soon as I sync them with my iPhone, the Podcasts app just adds all of the rest of the files I've sync'd in with the first album that I added.

These lectures all came from the same publisher (FYI I legally own them), but I've removed all metadata related to the publisher that I can see in iTunes. There's nothing as far as I can tell that is telling iTunes to group them together, but it keeps on doing it anyway. In fact, while troubleshooting I tried converting a music album that was completely unrelated to these lectures into a podcast, and it also was merged in the Podcasts app with the original podcast I created, once sync'ing with my iPhone.

I can confirm what that the fix does work. The latest update to the podcasts app appears to have even made this worse if you can believe it so this fix was definitely needed.

The grouping of all the files together was annoying, but I could work with it. I tend to manually download all of the files for a podcast and start from episode 1 so this was hitting me a lot. However, on my new iPhone 5s when I synced one of these shows I found that they all got grouped as a single episode! Worse still, the show description didn't match the show being played. For instance, I synced 5 episodes of one show, I saw 1 episdoe in the app and it said it was episode 22 but when I started playing it I found out it was episode 26.

I just applied the fix for this show and now I see all of the episodes that I've downloaded and they're grouped properly. Next onto fixing my other shows.

It's a mixed bag actually, but I don't think it's the fault of your fix.

Podcast syncing just seems to be completely broken lately. My first upgrade to iTunes 11 blew away 90+% of my podcasts in iTunes because it only synced what was currently in the Podcasts app, with no accounting for manually downloaded content or anything that was in iTunes but not synced due to space concerns. Since then I've refused to turn on the iCloud sync until I see consistent reports that it's working without issue.

Unfortunately, regular syncing has gotten downright awful. Even after fixing the id3 tags I still randomly have these podcasts collapse up into a single episode, that won't even play sometimes. Similarly, I have several items that magically reset to partially played, even when I mark them as unplayed on both my iPhone and iTurnes, then sync.

Worse, it seems like even though I have it set to only sync the 10 least recent unplayed episodes I often see played episodes left on my phone and new content doesn't show up.

The assumption from Apple seems to be that you will always sync all content, even if you don't have space for it (my Podcasts collection is currently 136GB, even with a 64GB iPhone 5s good luck) and that you'll be using iCloud sync for everything. Oh, and that nobody manually downloads Podcast content.

I have no problem with the concept of iCloud sync but it needs to work properly, it's been promised since the Podcast app came out and even when iTunes 11 claimed it added it there's still massive issues that just scream of a rushed release and a lack of testing. In the meantime, don't break the manual syncing that was working flawlessly until iTunes 11.
