transferring from external hard drive to new iMac

I got a new iMac with a huge hard drive. I'd like to transfer all my data from my external hard drive into my new iMac computer. What the correct way, and the best way to do that?

Thank you.

Hello Mary Anne:

I would probably attach the external HD and copy the information. Of course, the destination would depend on what kind of data you are transferring.

Dark1, I'm experiencing the same issue. I can't copy my iTunes music files over from my external hard drive without getting an error message once it starts copying. If you figured it out, could you offer your solution? I'm desperate for help here. There are no issues with either drive according to the disk repair drive.

Note: My music was originally stored on a Windows CPU. When it crashed, I was able to move all the contents of my hard drive to the external HD. Now that I've got a new iMac, I'm trying to move all that music back to an internal HD.

Any suggestions?

Sad but related story. A common one though. My iMac Intel computer died. Hard drive no longer works. It was born in 2006. So by Apple's standard, it is very very old. But all data still there. Had Apple Genius transfer it all to a LaCie external hard drive since data is needed. They were very nice about it. The service did not cost anything except a trip to the Apple Store (which was quite a distance from my residence). Am buying a new iMac and want to put the all of data from the LaCie onto the new one myself as it is a long way back to the Apple Store. But I don't know how to do it. Do I just link the LaCie to the new iMac with a USB cable and the right things will just happen? Yeah I know, turn it on first LOL I'm trying to keep some levity in this just horrible experience. Please advise as I am limping along on an old PowerBook G4, yikes. I would be eternally grateful for any help given.
