guest network does not work when bridging airport express to extreme

Hello everyone,

i just upgraded my airport extreme 5th gen and airport express (dual band) to 7.6.3 which is supposed to enable guest network extenstion..

my airport extreme is hardwired to airport express (set as bridged mode), eveything works fine with internet connectivity and roaming between the two since both are set with the same ssd name and wpa pass, i have enabled guest network on both to test the new update, which worked fine with airport extreme, then i went downstairs to test airport express guest network which didnt work.. i can see and join the network, IPs are set correctly exactly like airport extreme.

while testing airport express guest network i noticed that i can only browse google website or google search results, youtube website can be accessed too but it will not broadcast youtube videos.. any other website cannot be accessed thru airport express guest network..

since airport express guest network is providing a very limited access i tried enabling vpn on my iphone and managed to get full access with extremely slow speed.. can this be a bug on the firmware, did anyone find a solution???

Thanks

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1

the only difference between them is supported bands... can this be the problem?

I cannot say, since I have no way to test the same devices.

Make sure that the AirPort Extreme is set to use a lower numbered channel for 5 GHz like 36, 40, 44 or 48 since the European version likely does not support the higher 5 GHz channels of 149, 153, 157 and 161.

@k2Satellite

dont waste your time loading and reloading the firmware.. i already did this for both and nothing changed.. i even restored them to defualt settings and reconfigured everything...

@Bob

they are manually set for 2.4 ( 1 & 6), 5ghz (36,40) to enable seamless roaming between iphones/ipads..thats how i tested them on the first place..

So got 2 more devices at work brand new in a box. Both current generations like mine. updated the firmware and everything worked. with a switch between, directly connected, & wirelessly bridged. All worked fine even with different SSID guest names on each device. the extreme complained that it was a double nat setup because we just plugged it into our work network, but Every test worked. we restored each time we did the new config. I get home and restore both of mine and setup the router (extreme) first and the express second. NO luck connecting out on the express guest network. creepy cwawly.

I tested using the same settings and everything works perfectly on my U.S. version of the AirPorts. Guest network works perfectly as well when I test it. Everything works fine when I use the "Automatic" channel setting as well.

I'll post back if something changes, but so far, everything has been flawless.

I'm in the same spot as @edubai. Time Capsule (DHCP, NAT, Wifi & guest wifi), 2 Airport Express devices in bridged mode ans setup to provide wifi roaming (Same SSID/pword). All running 7.6.3.

My Time Capsule is one generation behind the Airport Express devices, but all running the same software. The Airport Express units are conneted via Ethernet (to the Express WAN Ports) and are not setup in a WDS mode.

When connected to my guest wifi network, I can only access google.com when any device (latop, iphone, ipad) is associated with my airport express devices. When associated with my Airport Extreme's guest network (same SSID and pword), I have full Internet access and it works great. (I check the association by alt-clicking on the wifi symbol on the menu bar).

I've tried changing radios to automatic. I've turned on and off "IPV6 connection sharing".

It would appear that Apple's new guest network implementation is a bit buggy.

did you connect them direcly without a switch?

Simple bridge mode modem > AirPort Extreme providing DHCP and NAT > Netgear 8-port Gigabit Switch > AirPort Express......flawless so far

Also tested

Simple bridge mode modem > AirPort Extreme providing DHCP and NAT >>>(wireless) AirPort Express....flawless as well

I assumed that the Guest Network tab would show up again for bridge mode airport express users after the latest 7.6.3. The Gust Network tab does NOT show up on my airport express still. The Guest Network tab only shows up if I select anything other than Bridge Mode. Is it supposed to be possible or not?

Basic cablemodem (bridged no-dhcp) ~> Airport Extreme (dhcp on) ~> cat5e to Airport Express (bridged mode enabled, idential SSID as Extreme being "created"

I want to extend the wireless network over ethernet, if I pick extend wireless network, it's assuming everything will be wireless only. (and the Express is too far for that)

So again, are we supposed to be able to extend and or broadcast the guest wireless network from the express after this latest update? Please help me understand.

I had guest network disabled but wanted to try it again after reading abou this possibily.

Not sure what you mean by "tab". The option to enable the Guest Network is found in the middle of the Wireless settings page. You are not trying to use an older version of AirPort Utility, are you? This won't work. You have to use AirPort Utility 6.2.

There is no "tab" but the option to enable the Guest Network will appear if you have a simultaneous dual band AirPort Express. This is the "square" version of the Express.....looks like a miniature AirPort Extreme.

The screenshots above were taken from my AirPort Express......which "extends" the main AirPort Extreme in a roaming network configuration. In other words, the AirPort Express is connected to the AirPort Extreme with an Ethernet cable. The AirPort Extreme handles DHCP and NAT. The AirPort Express is configured in Bridge Mode.

As I noted previously, everything works flawlessly since the day that I updated the firmware and upgraded to AirPort Utility 6.2.

I forgot to clearify this is the latest Airport Extreme and latest square dual band express.

What you've shown is exactly what I want. Bridged mode AND the ability to enabled the guest network!

I'm using the Windows Airport utility 5.6.1

Do they have a 6.x version of Airport Utility for Windows? (couldnt find one, update says it's the latest)

Here is a youtube walk through of my settings since it's easier then trying to take/post a bunch of pix.

(just uploaded via iPhone)

You'll notice I can only make the Guest Wireless optoin appear if I don't use bridge mode. (then it appears) It's a tab the way I see it, call it what you will though

By the way I'm trying to do this for a friend remotely via logmein. I only have access to a windows 8 desktop on that end at this time.

Hey @edubai, I have the exactly same issue.

I have tried the two configurations below. The first is the preferred method, however it does not work correctly. The second config works, however I would rather connect both basestations over ethernet.

Configuration 1 - Ethernet :

ADSL2+ (DrayTek Vigor120bridge modem) -> Airport Extreme (MD031B/A) -> Ethernet -> Airport Express (MC414B/A)

  • Airport Express set to Create Wireless Network and Bridge Mode
  • Main network and Guest Network set up on both base stations
  • Both network are perfect when connected to the Airport Extreme
  • Main network is perfect when connect via the Airport Express
  • Guest network can only connect to Google websites (?!?!?) when connect via the Airport Express

Configuration 2 - Wireless :

ADSL2+ (DrayTek Vigor120bridge modem) -> Airport Extreme (MD031B/A) -> WiFi -> Airport Express (MC414B/A)

  • Airport Express set to Extent a Wireless Network and Bridge Mode
  • Main network and Guest Network set up on both base stations
  • Both network are perfect when connected to the Airport Extreme and Airport Express

So weird hey? Why can I browser Google sites (gmail, search, youtube etc) but not others when connecting to a Guest network that has been extend over ethernet.

A bug in 7.6.3 firmware perhaps?

I have reported this to Apple Care via their support line. I'll post back if I hear anything further
