guest network does not work when bridging airport express to extreme

Hello everyone,

i just upgraded my airport extreme 5th gen and airport express (dual band) to 7.6.3 which is supposed to enable guest network extenstion..

my airport extreme is hardwired to airport express (set as bridged mode), eveything works fine with internet connectivity and roaming between the two since both are set with the same ssd name and wpa pass, i have enabled guest network on both to test the new update, which worked fine with airport extreme, then i went downstairs to test airport express guest network which didnt work.. i can see and join the network, IPs are set correctly exactly like airport extreme.

while testing airport express guest network i noticed that i can only browse google website or google search results, youtube website can be accessed too but it will not broadcast youtube videos.. any other website cannot be accessed thru airport express guest network..

since airport express guest network is providing a very limited access i tried enabling vpn on my iphone and managed to get full access with extremely slow speed.. can this be a bug on the firmware, did anyone find a solution???

Yes, that will work, but you will have major network issues with two DHCP servers and double NAT. Even if you don't have conflicting IP addresses at first, you may find that devices loose internet connectivity with the double NAT. Also all port forwarding if you have any won't work.

Hmm, seems to be working for my setup. My router sends static IP addresses to my three desktop computers. Port forwarding routes all incoming internet traffic (FTP, web, etc) to my server (via static assigned IP). The extreme is creating two wireless networks using the DHCP range that I have set (which does not encompass the wired IP's).

Since only wireless clients will connect to the Extreme, I can't see a conflict with the wired LAN IP's, and since the Extreme is the one handing out dynamic IP's to wireless clients I also don't see where a conflict would happen.

Though I can imagine this could potentially be buggy, especially since Airport Utility is perpetually unhappy, I am curious to know why.

3 years later...my preliminary tests are that the 7.7.7 update fixes the perfromance issue with a bridged guest network. I'd long since given up and moved on to other products, but when I saw 7.7.7 was released, I thought I'd give it a try.

I agree, 7.7.7 (which oddly is listed as 7.6.7 on the web page) fixes the problem for me, too: Full speed downloads now using VLAN tagged guest network.
