Kernel Task Slowing my Mac

Hi,

I have 13" MacBook Pro (2011) with 4GB RAM, 2.4GHz. It is 1 year old. I am using OSX 10.8.2. I have noticed my Mac is slow, sometimes freezing from last few days. Kernel_task %CPU is fluctuating from 30% to 250%. When it is more than 200%, my Mac is dead slow. What would be the reason for fluctuation? 1min it is at 20% and in the next min it is at 250%. What would be the solution to my problem? Do I need to restore my Mac? I just updated Java lately. Your help woudl be much appreciated.

Regards,

Phal

This solve the problem for me.

1. Go to About this mac under the apple in the upper left and click on More info

2. Click on system report

3. make a note of what it says after Model Identifier

4. go to your master drive – System -Library – Extensions – IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext -Contents – Plugins – ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext – Contents – Resources – find the name from step 3 and move it to a folder that you can find again if needed.

3. Restart and you’re done

I hope this helps.

I had problems locating it as well but you'll have to go to:

User folder

System

Library

Extension

IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext

*hit control right click to open package

Contents

Plugins

ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext

*hit control right click to open package

Contents

Resources

THEN choose what your model identifier is which is what you did in step 3

Mines was MacBookPro8_1

If you are able to move it can you please let me know how you did it as I am stuck at this last step of moving it to a different folder. If possible where did you move the folder and if you replaced it with a different file, if so what file was it and could I use it as well?

Thanks

Fixing kernel_task overloding your computer!!!

Use this at your own risk. It worked for me.

Basic Procedure:

1- Click in the apple logo on the upleft corner, select "About This Mac".

2- Click in "More Info".

3- Click in "System Report".

4- Take note of "Model Identifier".

5- Create a new folder called "Recovery_Kernel_Task".

6- Select Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext

7- Click the mouse right button at that file and select "Show Package Contents"

8- Open the folder Contents/Resources.

9- Look for the Model Identifier in step 4.

10- Move the file to the folder you've created, if you need to restore the file.

11- Check the folder in step 8 has 49 files instead of 50 (original files).

12- Restart the computer and be happy!
