13" MacBook Pro audio line in problem

Hello,

i would like to use my MacBook Pro audio line in to record. I have followed the instructions on how to alter the audio port so it is audio in rather than out. However, in the sound section of system preferences under the input tab, there is no option to select 'use audio for:' meaning i am unable to make the audio jack into a line in.

Is there anything that can be done?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

I don't disagree, removal of the audio in was a surprise but that's life now. And as the audio ability of those nasty little IC inputs that Macs (and all other laptops) suffer with is mediocre, I don't miss it either.

I have 2009 MBP's myself, a simple USB interface is cheap and significantly better quality than the audio in, go that way.

"Apple Symbol (upper left) > About this Mac > More Info > System Report.

Under 'Hardware' select Audio > Devices. It should say 'built in input' and 'built in output'

If it does, you have a dual function headphone socket."

When I do that it says (Built In) and under that it says this:

Line Input:

Connection: Combination Input

I'm trying to post a screen shot of all of it but it won't let me. When I go to the Sound Preferences page and select "Use Audio Port For Sound Input" it does not give me the "line in" option... Seeing as how it says combination input and my prefs allow me to select Use Audio Port for Sound Input I would think this should work.

My MBP has audio inputs, the OP's does not, perhaps you meant to reply to him/her?

Forgive me if I'm ignorant of how this works but why would I reply to the OP when I have the same problem as him? I replied to you since you had posted some clarifying notes in response to manofdogz... Even though my reply was to you can't everyone else see it? Perhaps someone else would have some insight, at least that's what I hope.

My 13" MBP is an early 2011 model so as far as I can tell from everything posted and my own research I should be able to use my port as a Combination Port for both in and out.

Get hold of a pair of Apple earbuds with a mic, see if that turns the input on (input quality is very mediocre, if you care about the sound get something better, a USB interface) Also try a TS rather than TRS cable.

I'll assume that you mean post images here. Do it again, it often works after the first attempt, not on the first attempt.

Hi, Csound1,

I am trying to digitize some records. I plan to buy a usb turntable, but quite a few reviews of the one which seems best, in my price range, (Audio Technica LP 120USB) say that using the usb cable to connect to the computer gives significantly poorer sound quality than using RCA cables.

Since my new macbook pro doesn't have an audio input, I am told that I can't use RCA cables.

I'm confused. Is USB in general fine for this use? So would that be a clue that the usb problem is a fault in the Audio Technica turntable?

Or is there some other moderately-priced usb turntable that would give better results, since RCA cables are not an option?

Thanks
