Alternatives to iTunes?

Being on an iTunes/Mac forum, I understand that I might be barking up the wrong tree, but I'm going to ask anyway:

I hate iTunes11 with a passion. Last week (for unrelated reasons), I had to install a new hard drive, and I'm looking at this as a way to have a fresh start, and I'd like that fresh start to be iTunes-free.

I own an iPod Touch (4th gen) and an iPad (1st gen), and I like both of these devices (and I'm not interested in upgrading either of them). Are there any non-iTunes music management programs that I can use to sync both of these devices on my Windows 7 laptop? I have heard that WinAmp 2.0 might work, but I haven't found any confirmation of that on their website. Someone else mentioned a program called Media Monkey, which I've never heard of.

Anyway, all I want to do is to have a player for my computer, and something that I can use to sync these two i-devices. Does anyone know anything that I can use instead of iTunes?

Thanks for your help!

Option 1.

Show your complete and total ingratitude towards the person who apparently thinks so much of you that he/she so thoughtfully and generously gave you such an expensive and sophisticated present by;

  • throwing it away
  • giving it away
  • leaving outside on the street with a note saying "I hate this thing, will some more appreciative soul take it away and give it a good home please?" (Please is optional if you are that ungrateful.)

Option 2.

Go and read the post linked above ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4581150 ) and see if anything in it helps you. (I'm not going to hold my breath.)

Option 3.

Ask, in a polite manner, how to get the best out of iTunes and the iPod, instead of trying to pick a fight.

To be considered when using options 1, 2 or 3.

Finally, no matter what else you choose to do, remember this; this forum is here to help people find out how to get the best from their iPods. It is a user-to-user forum and despite the minimal presence of Apple staff as Community Specialists, Apple are not particularly interested in your approach and it is therefoe a waste of your time to use it. Furthermore, those of us here who give their time (for free) to help people like you are likely to be offended by your approach and therefore ignore your posts.

I obviously missed your December thread. (That's what happens when there are too many stupid threads to wade through.)

If you head back to the "Various iTunes Questions" that you asked (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4581150) I'll try and address some of them.

For what it's worth;

Actually, it's a very complex piece of software with enough options in it that no one need go anywhere else. It does however, mean that you are bound to find fields and options that you never use. They can be hidden, turned off and ignored.

And no, I don't know of any other programme that can be used for synchronising with an iPod.

  • iTunes has been designed specifically to work with iPods and iPads. Nothing else has.
  • Why would you not want to use a programme that has been especially written to go with the devices you've spent so much money on? That makes no sense.
  • Do you have specific issues with iTunes? If so, what are they?

Edit, after discovering that this is your second thread on the same subject:

Why would you create a second thread?

Hi, fiend, and thanks for your reply.

1) I find iTunes to be a clumsy, bloated piece of software. And, for what it's worth, I never spent money on my iPad and iPod -- they were both gifts. I like them both very much, but had it been my own money, I probably would have bought something else.

2) Specific issues with iTunes are too numerous to list in this thread (they are covered very well on other discussions in this forum. Here's the thread I started on the subject (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4581150), but no replies. I also have seen many of these objections voiced in this thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4557014?answerId=20521240022#20521240022), but that thread ended up being more of a place to vent about problems, with litte hope of finding solutions.

3) I created a second thread (and a third, actually...this was the first) because, despite the high activity level of these forums, no one replied to this one, so I figured I'd try a thread in a different category in hopes of getting some input.

All that aside, I understand that no other program has being designed specifically to work with iPods/iPads. That said, do you know if there are other programs that CAN work with them (even despite different design goals)?

Thanks for your reply

I too will check back.

I recently have a situation where iTunes will crash every time I try to connect to a device, but is fine when I log in as a different user.

I have tried creating a new library - no success.

I have reinstalled iTunes after zapping it. No.

I had hard drive problems, so...

I have recovered time machine to entirely replace the hard disk with a new one, and then tried again. Nopes.

So I really think an alternative for sticky situations like this would suit me too, at least until I find time to figure out what next to do with my user account on this mac which has been made a problem JUST BECAUSE my itunes app crashes whenever I try to connect.

For now my workaround is to be someone else...

Check out Media Monkey (it's free) and if you like it, the upgrade to Media Monkey Gold is reasonable.

Wondershare "Mobile Go"looks interesting. They have a free trial. I've used other Wondershare programs and they are very good.
