Missing Font Error–TimesNewRomanMS

So I did a full erase and install on my ibook, then reinstalled Pages, and am now finding that all of my Pages documents give me missing font error messages, the main one being TimesNewRomanMS. This is a mystery to me, since I didn't switch word processors or anything. The real problem is that if I make a font change, I will lose formatting (such as italicized paragraphs) on these documents. Does anyone know if and how I can locate this font, or what else I can do to solve this problem?

Thanks

JMMcGee,

Any type face with an MS after its name is one that was installed by a MicroSoft program. When you say you did a full erase on your iBook, I assume you mean you wiped out everything on your hard drive. When you reinstalled some things, my guess is that you didn't reinstall whatever application it was that installed that font in the first place. It wasn't Pages.

JMMCGEE,

welcome to Apple Discussions.

There's another thread on this topic ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=458006&tstart=15) where Dale Gillard provides an AppleScript to change the name of the missing font.

Sometimes the font name in Pages documents differs from the internal font name, e.g. Pages is missing ArialMS but the font name is ArialMT. The Dale's AppleScript helps to correct the name.

BTW: TimesNewRomanMS needs to be replaced with TimesNewRomanPSMT.

Including the regular templates? Font styles are document specific.

Many programs install a version of Times or Times New Roman. I opened the Font Book app and found three versions on my machine.

You may want to open Font Book and see what you have. It is possible it is deactivated and you need to activate it.

Dennis,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I think you're right, but what application do you think it was? I tried following advice I found in another thread and downloaded MS Office, and tried copying the fonts I found in a folder called "Office." But that didn't solve the problem. I'm not sure if I did it exactly right, and I'm not sure what else to try either. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Hi Matthias,

Thanks for your response. I read what Dale G said, but I admit I can't follow it. If you understand what he is saying, would you mind translating for me? I don't really know what is meant by an Applescript or how to go about executing any such change. Is it the case that the font is the same but just named something else and that the problem stems from such a trivial discrepancy? (What I still really don't get is why a font I chose inside Pages wouldn't work after reinstalling? I don't understand how I could have somehow selected an foreign font...)

John,

look into your Application folder. There's another folder called AppleScript which contains the Script Editor. Launch this application, copy and paste Dale's script and, translate and save the file in <yourusername>/Library/Scripts/Pages. If that folder doesn't exist, create it.

In your menu bar on top of your screen there should be a black script symbol, it looks like sheet of paper in shape of an S. Click on the icon. At the end of the list there should be an entry Pages that contains your script(s). Choose the script and it will do it's action.

To get the name of your fonts, launch Font Book, click on a font and press command-i. You'll see a lot of information about the font. The first entry is Postscript Name which is the name you're looking for.

Matthias,

Getting closer I think but still having trouble. I created a folder as you said, and pasted Dale's script into Script Editor (inserting the appropriate fonts), but I keep getting syntax error messages, such as: Expected “, ” but found “text”. I tried making minor grammatical changes but to no avail.
I did try pasting directly what Dale had (that is, I made no changes) and still got the same error message. So I've no idea what's up.

As for the font book, I did "control I" and saw the additional info. but am still a bit confused since all the ones under Times New Roman say 18 pt font....

Also, I can't find the script symbol you mentioned. I feel like I've seen it before, but it's not at the top of my screen now and I don't know how to get it there.

I'll much appreciate your continued assistance.

Hey Kurt,

The fonts look like they're enabled. Any other ideas/suggestions? I'm getting nowhere. I've been trying to add a list of fonts from Microsoft Office into Font Book, but I can't even see that they've actually been added, and don't know if that'll work anyway.

If nobody knows how to fix this problem, I'll just call Apple tech support because this is a huge nuissance.

Dennis,

Do you know how I can install Microsoft fonts, as you suggest is the problem. I have downloaded Office 2004 Test Drive, and have tried copying a list of fonts in a folder called Office, but don't really know what I'm doing and so far nothing's worked. Will it work if I go all the way and actually install Office?

Thanks

ahhh. I miss Font Reserve which I use on my iMac. Using Font Reserve I kept track of every font installed and what program installed it.

I have the Times New Roman PSMT font on my machine. What installed it? No clue since I do not have any Microsoft products. It might have been one of the many free word processors I use:

AbiWord
Open Office

These two apps open Word files easily which might suggest they installed the fonts.

In your case, install Office test drive. It should install the fonts in the right place.
