Missing Font Error–TimesNewRomanMS

So I did a full erase and install on my ibook, then reinstalled Pages, and am now finding that all of my Pages documents give me missing font error messages, the main one being TimesNewRomanMS. This is a mystery to me, since I didn't switch word processors or anything. The real problem is that if I make a font change, I will lose formatting (such as italicized paragraphs) on these documents. Does anyone know if and how I can locate this font, or what else I can do to solve this problem?

Thanks

The fonts look like they're enabled. Any other
ideas/suggestions? I'm getting nowhere. I've been
trying to add a list of fonts from Microsoft Office
into Font Book, but I can't even see that they've
actually been added,

They'll be displayed in Font Book if they were added.

and don't know if that'll work

That will work. But you shouldn't need to do that. Just put them all into one of the Mac OS X Fonts folder, for example, the <Macintosh HD/Library/Fonts/> folder.

If nobody knows how to fix this problem...

The TimesNewRomanMS font is a Microsoft font (as someone else noted). You must have installed it with a Microsoft product like Internet Explorer or Microsoft Office. Have you reinstalled all the Microsoft products you previously had on your Mac before erasing it?

Kurt also suggested you use the AppleScript program I wrote to change this font to another variation of Times New Roman that is already installed. If you're having trouble using this script just email me and I'll send you a copy. (My email address is in my profile - click my name to view it.)

NB AppleScript is a programming language made by Apple and shipped with every Mac.

I'll just call Apple tech support because this is a huge nuissance.

You can do this, but it might be the 'long way' of fixing the problem, if indeed they came up with a solution.

Here's an easier solution, at least to my version of this problem. It seems that I often begin getting the error in a document when someone else on my network opens it (in Pages) and saves it again.

Here's what I did to make the error message go away:

1. Open Font Book and delete Times New Roman.

2. Quit Font Book.

3. Go to the following Microsoft web site and download the updated font package, which includes Arial as well as Times New Roman:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=d1d378f9-9b31-4cb3-a022 -c9148427a8c3&DisplayLang=en

4. Unstuff the .sit archive and double-click on Times New Roman, then click "Install" when the font comes up.

5. Quit Font Book, and open the problem document in Pages - hopefully without the annoying error message.

Erick,

In my mind, you're a genius. That worked perfectly. I'm only sorry I hadn't been back to check for more replies, since I see you wrote your message four days ago, during which time I'd begun to manually reformat my documents (thankfully, I didn't touch a number of them, which have now been fully restored as a result of this method.) I really am grateful, because no one at Apple (I wasted $60), or Microsoft or anyone else on these discussion pages was able to help me (and what they were having me try was complicated and confusing). I had given up, but your solution was simple and straightforward. EASY FIX INDEED!

I can't thank you enough.

Sincerely,

John

I am very surprised your earlier install of Office did not add these fonts since they are quite old.

There are multiple version of Times and Times New Roman...glad you found the right ones.

You may want to open Font Book again and make sure these fonts are not now listed as duplicates. In Font Book Duplicate fonts have a dot next to them. Having multiple version of Times New Roman activated can cause other weird behavior. You might want to deactivate (do not delete) the other Times New Roman versions.
