Problem with iPad connecting to Microsoft email systems?

I have just received the message below from our IT department but can find no reference to this on the web. Does anyone know any more about it?

Thanks

Les

"Unfortunately, an email problem has been identified which is affecting all organisations who synchronise Apple mobile devices with Microsoft email systems. This problem is with Apple in California for resolution.

IT Services have tried to manage the issue for the last couple of days to maintain a core service but this is becoming increasingly difficult and the service is degrading to unacceptable levels. In order to restore a quality service for the majority it is necessary to temporarily suspend the email synchronisation services to most Apple users e.g. iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch.

Other universities and organisations are implementing similar measures.

Remote access to email will still be available as usual via Outlook Web App and desktop ANYWHERE.

We will restore full email services to Apple users once a fix has been received and tested."

iOS 6.1: Excess Exchange activity after accepting an exception to recurring calendar event:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4532

Basically a bug was introduced in iOS 6.1 that causes excessive load on exchange servers. This can result in increased slowdown or even total crashes of the server. It should be fixed by the next iOS update.
