iPhone 4S unlock Vodafone

So a couple of months ago my boss got a iPhone 4S on contract i think from Vodafone but he never used it, it's still on the setup and activation screen. So i bought it and jm on orange. When I put a orange sim in, I get signal bars and a 3G symbol but when connected to wifi and I try and activate it, it says the SIM card interested in this.... etc... So it is getting signal but its not activating. So I'm guessing its not gonna work like that?

Will I be able to ring Vodafone and get it unlock for a fee? Even though I'm not the original buyer.

Only compatible SIM cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate iphone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iphone or visit a supported carrier store to receive a replacement SIM card.

Not sure how vodafone works, but you can try and unlock thru them, but if they don't then your boss will have to call them to have them unlock it for you.

Only the carrier that the phone is locked to can unlock it.
