Macbook pro retina 15 2013 newest version fan noise for few seconds

I have this problem too.

I bought yesterday a Retina,15-inch, Early 2013, 2,7 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 (the new retina display macbook) and have an issue of sudden changes of the speed of the fans without apparent cause.

The fans go suddenly up to 5918 rpm without apparent cause, with the macbook idle. This is the second time it has happened and I am very worried about it. The last peak of rpms occurred when I was writing a letter on Pages. The CPU workload was negligible.

You can see the unexpected peaks of rpms in the graph. I was not working in any CPU intensive task.

Hope this is solved soon.

This fan behavior is not normal. Two days ago I bought the original 15" rMBP(Mid-2012) and it have a fan issue issue where the fans would ramp up randomly when I was connected to the Internet. I called AppleCare, and they had me bring it back the Apple Store, for not just an exchange, but a capture. The engineers wanted to get my laptop to determine what is causing that issue.

When I took it back, they upgraded me to the latest model(early 2013) and it does not have that issue so far.

I recommend called AppleCare and asking them about it. When i mentioned the fan issue, I was immediately sent from Tier 1 to Tier 2, no troubleshooting performed.

I have an appointment with Apple support on Monday. I will write here the result. Regards.

This seem to be the New way Apple has setup the Retina models.

There have been many report of the same thing on newer, not just the Newest, versions of the retina. The original versions, up until recently, did not do this Fan At Max (Or near Max) Speed for a few seconds every now and then or with certain operations.

Seems Apple has set it like this to stop certain things from overheating.

I would have to disagree. It was made very clear to me that the behavior I was seeing was not normal at all. Copying a 2GB file from a file server after a cold boot where the machine was just out of the box is not normal, where iStat reported everything in the low to sub-100 range.

Then please explain why this is happeing on Just the Newer manufactured Retinas and not the older ones.

There has been at least one other thread on this forum about it. And more then likely on other forums.

Then it is a Major Hardware Snafu and everyone should just Return there Retinas for full refund and move to something else.

When you say Sub 100° range are you talking Fahrenheit. As if you are talking Celsius then that is HOT. Sub 50°c would be in the normal range.

Well IMHO it is Apple that has changed the firmware on the Retina models to do this. Or as stated earlier it is a Major Hardware bug and all that have this problem should Immediately Return that system for a Full Refund. No telling what other hardware flaws will show up in the future.

I have stated earlier that I too am experienceing intermittent fan issues. If this were a car, we would all be screwed. Eventually, the manufacturer would issue a recall. However, it's a computer and the best policy is to return the machine. Buying a new machine and asking the genius bar to tinker with it is a path that I am NOT willing to take. If it's new and not acting right, AAPL will get it back.

Oh dear. I've had my one - exact same spec - since yesterday morning, and have been disturbed by the amount of times the fan comes on. Currently I'm only running Mail and Chrome - and sure enough the fan comes on every now and then, lasts a good few seconds (here it comes again) and then dies off. What surprises me most is that it is loud. I was led to believe that the new fans were designed to reduce the fan noise. (the fans gone off again).

I'm eagerly going to watch this thread now as if I need to take it back, 1, i'll be massively disappointed (as I've only just finished setting it up), and 2 p'ed off as I had it delivered so I didn't need to travel the 30-odd miles to the Apple store.

Remember you only have 14 days from DATE of Purchase to return it. And I do not know what Apples policy is on the shipping time whether that is included in that 14 days.

Here you can see the temperatures on one of those fan spikes. I dont really know when the fan should get more than 5000rpm, but fairly it doesnt look good. It sounds like a tempest! After a short while, the fan would stop. This usually occurs once an hour or two.

Of course an Apple employee would say "It is Normal" as it is a Brand New computer and whatever happens on a Brand New Apple Computer Must Be Normal.
