Will my MacBook work without the screen?

The screen on my 2011 MacBook is broken but the unit works fine with an external display. If I remove the screen (as its an unsightly mess) will the unit still work?

It still works!!!!! Not only that, it was so easy to do I'm going to buy a replacement screen (which you can pick up for less than £50) and fix it completely hopefully. Stay tuned for results....oh and hopefully the company which quoted me £550 to fix it will burn down overnight. Thanks for your help dalstott, that guide was great.

Hello Dazcon4,

Sorry i can't give you an answer because i'm having the same problem (my macbook's screen stopped working) i'm considering using an external monitor but i'm wondering if the macbook detects it automatically or do i need to set it up manually (how to do so given that we can't see what's on the macbook's screen ?)

What happens when you reboot the computer ? Does it start using the external monitor or do you need to set it up each time ?

Are you using an DVI or a VGA monitor ?

Sorry again for disrupting your topic !

Thank you

There's a shortcut key once you've plugged the monitor in and the computer is up and running. Think it is the cmd key and f1. If you google it you'll find it somewhere.

If if I don't get a definite answer soon I'm just going to gamble and do it. And on your conscious' be it to the people who know the answer but couldn't be bothered to help out a man in need! Lol.

Wow, what a cooincidence. I hit my screen months ago and it has slowly bled down to the point where I can only use an external monitor. I just went to find out price to replace and was also quoted over $500.00. Where did you go to find a replacement screen for $50.00 and for the right model? How did you know how to replace it yourself?

Can you link to the specific guide you used? I looked around on that site and was Display Assembly Replacement guide, but wasn't sure if that was it. Thought I'd go with what worked for you.

I have an older MBP that I'm using as a media computer and it stays closed and under my coffee table, but I think it's a warm environment so the fans run non-stop. I keep it hooked up to a projector, so I thought I'd remove the display to allow a little more airflow since I don't really need the display.

Thanks!
