How do I upgrade a IP Touch gen 2 from OS 3.x to 4.3 or latest it supports
. iTunes tries to upgrade it to 5.x which the device doesn't support and everything hangs

A 1G iPod can go to iOS 2.2 via iTunes and iOS 3.1.3 via

A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X. If a Mac it requires OSX 10.5.8 or later. With OSX 10.4.11 you can only go to iTunes 9.X which gets you as high as iOS 4.1.
Are you sure yo have a 2G?
I did check and do have a generation 2. 16gb iPod Touch. Maybe I'm asking the wrong question. I want to download a Facebook app, it says I need OS 4.3 or greater. I plug the unit into iTunes and it says my OS os old, the latest is 5.x click here to download it. I click, it starts a back up, it never finishes, I've waited for hours and attempted several times. If I instigate a mabual backup it works, takes about 10 minutes. Then I try to up-date the OS again, it still wants to back-up, it starts, progrss bar moves ouy a tiny but and then stops, forever
Any Idea?

- What iOS is now on the iPod? Settings>General>About>Version
- What version of iTunes do you have on the computer?
- You can't install the current version of FB on a 2G iPod since, as I said before, a 2G can only go as high as iOS 4.2.1.
- Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

Then you have a 1G iPod, the original iPod touch. Those can only go to 3.1.3
As Illaass mentioned, your 2nd generation iPod Touch will not support any iOS version higher than 4.2.1. There is no way to get iOS version 4.3 on that device, sorry.
