iDVD & Sony DSR-11

iDVD & Sony DSR-11

Quick question for all of the super guru's out there, I am using a Sony DSR-11 deck and iMovie HD works fine with it and Final Cut Express HD works fine with it but iDVD doesn't recognize it. My question to anyone who might know is why? and is there anything I can do to correct / fix it?

Are you using it in some AV/DV conversion mode?

Note: OneStep DVD will only capture from recorded tape on a DV camcorder or deck. OneStep DVD will not work with analog-to-DV converters. It will also not work if you are using your camcorder or deck as a pass-through device to digitize from an analog souce (such as VHS or Hi-8). In order to function, OneStep DVD reads the timecode from your DV tape and it relies on DV device control to communicate with the camera or deck.

Hi John,
no A-D conversion, the DSR-11 is connected directly to the Mac using the firewire 400 port. It works perfectly with iMovie and Final Cut Express HD.

forgot to add - there is nothing else connected to the DSR-11 (ie. pass through) so it is just the deck. It seems as though iDVD is not communicating with the deck. Is there a list of supported devices?

Thanks but I'm really interested in finding out what devices are supposedly compatible with iDVD, since the DSR is obviously compatible with iMovie and FCE HD.

Did you make sure that the deck was connected and turned on before launching iDVD and activating onestep?

Sorry for the late reply, yes, I made sure it was powered up prior to launching iDVD. I checked it first with FCE HD and then with another application that I have that organizes and catalog's video clips and then checked it with iDVD. After I got the error, I checked it again with the other apps and it works fine so it must be with iDVD. Kind of weird that the other apps work fine and iDVD won't recognize it.

Sorry for my even later reply... I have a friend with a DSR-11 who has no problem using OneStep with iDVD 6.

Make sure FCE or iMovie aren't open when you attempt the iDVD onestep capture (or iChat w/ iSight camera). Does the tape have any timecode breaks?

Right now it's just not even recognizing the DSR-11. Occasionally there may be a timecode break but that's definitely not the problem here.

I think that I've found the problem with iDVD and the DSR-11. Turns out if you use a full length DV tape (3 hours) iDVD won't recognize it but if you use a 1 hour camcorder tape in the DSR-11 then it works fine. Wierd....

Must be the DVCAM speed that it doesnt like...not too surprising since iDVD is really a consumer app and optimized for mini-DV ... so it seems to me. Just a thought
