OS-X update and Java

If I'm running Java SE7 latest update from Oracle, do I still need to install the latest Apple Java SE6 update? I went through Apple's last update and lost Java plug-in and had to reinstall it from Oracle, so why do I have to do this again for the Apple Java update and reinstall Java 7 from Oracle?

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Nobody here can answer the "why." This is a user-to-user forum so nobody here speaks for Apple.

All we can say is what is:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572

It explicitly says "Java for OS X 2013-001 delivers improved security, reliability, and compatibility by updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_41.

On systems that have not already installed Java for OS X 2012-006, this update disables the Java SE 6 applet plug-in. To use applets on a web page, click on the region labeled "Missing plug-in" to download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle. "

I read the notice. There are Websites which run Java for interactive or streaming Web pages, so Java is necessary for those Websites. And for what it's worth, if you have Java 6 and the latest update of Java 7 installed, including Java 7 enabled in the browsers, this Apple update doesn't appear to do anything except update Java 6, leaving Java 7 and your browsers alone. It's innocuous.
