Delta vs full update

In the OS X side some people claim that a "full" update (i.e. OS X Update Combo) might sometimes be more reliable than the smaller delta/incremental update.

AFAIK updating the iPhone via iTunes always does a full update while "over the air" (OTA) update is a delta update. Correct? Are there major updates that must be done via iTunes?

Are there any reliability issues between full vs delta updates??

Thanks for any anecdotes or folklore about this!

Oh well, there are same claims in the iOS side, too:

All I can tell you is that the vast majority of both iOS & OS X users just click "OK" & update when prompted. Then they go about their merry ways, completely oblivious to all of this "delta" vs "full" debate.

Yes. Like my wife and daughter with their iPhone 4Ss... No problems for them with delta updates.

On the other hand, I tend to do it the hard way: Reformat & install every major OS X update from scratch (at least that forces unnecessary old crud out and save some space).

And when I got the iPhone 5, the first thing I did was to reset it to the factory defaults.

p.s. I'm a Mac user since 1987 but I'm new to the iOS platform: iPhone 5 just replaced my ancient Nokia E70 "smartphone" from 2006.
