Lexmark T420d starts every printout with garbage page

I have used my Lexmark T420d without any problems in both Snow Leopard and Lion, but since upgrade (reinstallation in fact) to Mountain Lion the printer starts every printout by printing a page with garbage.

The printer is connected by USB. I have tried removing and reconfiguring the printer from printer preferences without improvement.

Anyone who has any ideas as how to fix this?

iMac (27-inch Late 2009), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

This worked! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Took me awhile to figure out how to delete printer and find the "Generic PCL" so I'm just going to post my steps below in case anyone else had similar issue finding Generic PCL.

>system preferences >printers & scanners > (for me the box on the left already had "Lexmark E238" selected in gray) so I just had to hit the - minus sign> delete printer > + sign > Lexmark E238 USB ("Use" dropdown choose: Generic PCL printer> add > ok

The garbage page could be Postscript code. Does it look like the following?

%!PS-Adobe-3.0 Query
userdict(`004_cvn{(`004) print flush}put
%%BeginFeatureQue

If yes, then do you know if your printer supports Postscript and some other printer language? If so, then it could be defaulted to this other language and printing this query page instead of simply replying to the query from the Mac. You should be able to print a configuration page via the menu button to check what the T420d has set.

Looks like PCL of one form or another based on the PJL comment. If you see a setting the printer something like Append CR to LF, this will print this page with all new lines starting at the left margin, rather than starting the next line where the previous line finished. With this additional information we could get a better idea of what is generating this page.

I have the same problem with my Lexmark T520. The problem also first appeared in 10.6. I checked System Preferences > Print & Scan > Options and Supplies > Driver and Duplex was incorrectly set to Not Installed. I changed it to Installed and still have the problem. This is the last of the many bugs introduced in 10.6. I just installed 10.8.4 and it still isn't fixed. Oh well…

I had the exact same problem on a Lexmark E232 on Mountain Lion 10.8.5: usually (not always) printed a page with "STRINGCODESET = UTF8 @PJL LJOBINFO USERID =... " before the rest of the job. Tried reinstalling the Lexmark driver from their website but that didn't fix the problem.

Fixed it by uninstalling the printer in System Preferences, then re-added it. Under the "Use:" dropdown, instead of choosing Lexmark E232, I chose Generic PCL Printer instead and everything seems to be working fine now.
