The files are Quicken 2007 data files that are part of the automated TM routine.

I used Disk Utility to repair permissions on the newly replaced hard disk I just had

installed in my Mac Mini.

Could the fact that my backup files were created with a previous name/password

and I am now using a new name/password (new HD) trying to unlock files make a diff?

Most instances of error code 10657 I can find are when folks were trying to use applications or open files in their Time Machine backups directly (ie, not via Time Machine.)

iPhoto may be a different/special case; but for other files, are you trying to access them directly via the Finder, or via the Time Machine "Star Wars" display?

Looks like 1426 is usually the same, or some non-liked characters in a Disk name?

I can't use the "star wars" portal to enter TM-- the arrow only takes me

back to 2/19/13 (the day I rebooted with a new hd after the old one crashed.)

All my efforts have been to go into the backup files on the ext hd via the Finder

directly.

I really don't understand the process of backing up files for an emergency

scenario if an emergency (crashed hd) renders it impossoble to access the files--

Im using the same OSX 10.5.8, the same machine Power PC, and i've rebuilt

Permissions using on board Disk Utility.

Is there a back door or Root approach I can use?

Methinks the discussion entry about the different name for one's computer

being a cause has merit. My previous hd name was "paul barrus's computer"

--I think. I never named it but I had noticed this before. I've tried every password with

it that Ive used to no avail.

Unless there's a magic key somewhere, I guess I kiss all the files goodbye and

begin life anew here in 2013!
