Because you can use it, for example, when you are doing a text editing function like renaming a file.

But to do that you just over-type!

I'm not really saying it's useful; I just think it is included in the menu because it is a standard text handling feature and a very small subset of the Finder's operations involve text handling.

You can just over-type in a word processor, too. Maybe they should just get rid of Cut altogether.

It's useful if you are shifting a large block of text from one end of a document to another.

Which begs the question: why is there in Finder at all?

That is a very good question. Why bother having it in the Finder menu if it's always grayed out?

Did you, or someone try to add a Cut command in the System Preferences? Which the OS ignores since there is no Cut option in the OS at the Finder level? Hmm.😕

But the point is that it isn't always grayed out. If the selection is files or folders it is grayed out, but if the selection is a piece of text, Cut becomes active.

Ah, but that's the reason for the OP's question. He wanted Cut at the Finder level for files and folders as it has been in Windows for years. That option finally appeared in OS X with Lion as Command+Option+V.

But yes, you are otherwise correct. Command+X is there in Snow Leopard, but not usable for what ACK007 was after.

There are other apps which could do this task !

Yes, the ones I posted were just the first ones I could find. There's another very popular one I posted over a year ago to somebody, but I couldn't locate that post.

Only if you're using Lion, 10.7.x or later. It doesn't exist in Snow Leopard, 10.6.x or earlier.

Cut: Command+X

Paste: Command+V

Not from the Finder in Snow Leopard for moving files and folders.
