Final Cut Pro X 10.0.7 - Import Canon XF100 MXF Media

Hello!

I'm doing some various workflow tests and have run into a problem with one of my main shooting formats -- Canon's X300 XF100 MXF media won't import after I've copied the files off of the CF card to my working hard drive. The CF card with the original footage has long been formatted so I can't plug that in and import from camera. The Canon XF plugin has been installed on the computer.

Anyone out there have any ideas how I can import this footage? I shouldn't be forced to import directly from the card--that's not always possible as we sometimes have to dump footage on set and format the cards for shooting.

Re importing media from XF100 to FCP X

This thread interests me. In order to save my media from my CF card from my Canon XF100 I have been opening up the contents file and dragging all the files inside it to an external drive. Obviously this was the wrong thing to do.

Now FCP X cannot see the files to import.

Can anyone tell me if I can save this media or have I lost it forever?

Thanks, Anne

If the Clips folder is totally intact – that is all the files that were originally inside are complete and haven't been re-arranged – it may be possible to create a new folder named CONTENTS and put the Clips folder into it.

FCPX may open it if you have the plug-in or the Canon Utility on Mavericks.

VLC should open the files, but its conversion options are delivery formats and there will be a quality hit if you edit with them.

Otherwise, there are MXF converters; depending on how important the footage is to you. (I have not used any so I can't recommend one,)

Like Canon XF camcorders (e.g. XF100, XF105, XF300, XF305) store video and audio files together in an MXF container, the Sony XDCAM camcorders also capture footage in MXF format. So you can simply consider them as the same thing.

However, the same as handling AVCHD files, decoding MXF media is very processor-intensive. If the performance of editing MXF footage directly is not sufficient on your computer system, I would recommend that you transcode your MXF media to Apple ProRes, the native media format of FCP. This requires third party software like an MXF Converter.
