I was making a talking photos project with my grandson. I wanted him to narrate the photos, so I kept the lens cover on my camera and recorded him. Then I imported the footage into the timeline. A pop up told me that I cannot add video (in this case photo stills) into the primary story line. How can I accomplish this?

Yes, be sure you've created a Project, not opened an audio only clip into its own timeline.
Select the narration movie clip in the Browser.
Shift-3 to set editing for Audio Only. (See the Edit menu)
Use Q to add the clip as a Connected clip, E to add it to the Primary Storyline.
I'm not quite sure how I got the message but I did write it down:
"You are combining audio and video clips outside the primary story line. You cannot add video clips to existing audio only compound clips" I believe I got the message when I tried to just pull the photo down.
1)Import your media (Video with sound only and Stills)
2) Create a new project
3) Drag into the timeline, the video (Which in your case is audio only, if I understood correctly)
4) Drag into the timeline, the stills...
See if that works
Can't do this now as I'm nearly out the door for an appointment. I'll try it tomorrow. But one thing I wondered - since I recorded the audio only by just putting on the lens cap, maybe I recorded audio and black for the video. However the timeline just looks like audio, not audio and video. I'll start over as soon as I can find the time.
Never seen a popup like that. Maybe you could take a screen shot. Is there anything on the storyline? Where is the narration?

It sounds as if you have opened the audio into the timeline panel rather than edited it into a project.
you did not by any chance take a photo with Audio instead of shooting a movie with audio ?
I took the photos months before with a consumer camera. So I imported them from my files.
I dont think the movie cares much about the lens cap. That would mean that it would not be able to record in the dark... That would make a dark Mercedes look pretty funky 🙂
