After upgrade from OS 10.6.8 to 10.8.2, MacBookPro intermittently requires 'exit' and 'boot'
commands to exit startup script and finnish booting. So far 'exit' and 'boot' does the job but
I'm hoping for a permanent fix. Thanks! Jay

Maybe one of your login items is causing a problem.
Try going to your user account, note what you login items are, and then delete them all. Restart. If you get a normal restart, then add back your login items one at a time. This will require a restart after adding each one back. See if you can isolate any application that may be affecting the restart.

- I have no applications set to 'open at login'.
- My user account, under Login Options, shows no login items.
- I use AutoLogin, display Login Window as List of Users; the only other
checkmark is to 'Show password hints'.
- I removed Java and Flash and all their folders several months ago.
- I do have Microsoft Office 2011 on both my Mac's.
- I do not have any trouble with my 2011 iMac since upgrading from
Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
I've been very careful, since I bought this Mac in 2008, to avoid growing a
startup menu.

Only attempting to clarify - Are you looking at Login Items or Login Options or maybe both?

Well, I'm out of ideas on why Repair Disk is grayed out.
My only thoughts are possible disk problems, but that doesn't make any sense based on your other posts.
Eric: You're right; I was looking at Login Options. Now, I've unchecked all three Login Items.
In addition, on similar boards from early MountainLion upgrades back in July 2012, I discovered
advice to NOT connect BLUETOOTH devices before power up. I'm trialing that now with my Magic
Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard; I should have mentioned those BLUETOOTH devices early
in my discussion here; Sorry!
Thanks, your guidance has led me to search Google for titles not found on my original post here.
There's plenty of fundamental troubleshooting and maintenance information available out there.
I'll progress slowly with any repair mechanism. I've been spoiled by more than three years of
simple problems to solve since switching from Windows to Mac. Therein may lie the problem for
Mac newbies; we don't have much trouble to resolve so we relax and don't bother to use Apple
Tutorials. I'll get back to my habit of Scientic Method for user knowledge. It's been easy to be
lazy with my Apple products up to now.

Barney: Thanks for your patience. I'm sticking with simple resolution methods so far. Hard to
imagine but just powering up without MagicMouse and Bluetooth Keyboard turned on seems to
have resolved my startup script issue. I can't be certain though because Eric's recommendation
to uncheck Startup Items may also have helped. A Google search revealed beaucoup reports
of startup script issues after upgrade to Mountail Lion at last Summers release of the OS.

Unchecking the Login Items doesn't do anything. The header of that column is "Hide" not "Disable." You have to select them and click the - (Remove) button.
Thanks Barney! That's what I did; I just didn't use the right terms when I mentioned I'd disabled login items.

Hindsight: I should have noticed; one of the Login Items I removed was a Java file.
I'd removed every Java folder I could find but missed this startup link. I expect
that was my startuip script problem. I searched those scripts each timef or clues;
I just missed this one. My practice of Scientific Method was lacking because I didn't
find a way to print that script to better compare each script. So, I surmise clearing
the Login Items was the final resolution.
