Because the iPad mini is only 5 1/4 inches wide. You can't space them wider than the device.

Thanks 4 your time, but instead of being a half inch apart,
They could have just as easily been 2 inches apart & still fit (?)
Get an external Bluetooth Speaker.
I'll just use my audio-technica headphones
(They're cheaper than a Bose speaker!).
