TextEdit can't display Russian text created in BBEditLite (classic version)

I have some Russian-language files I created using BBeditLite on my OS 9.1 Wall Street Powerbook, but TextEdit can't display them with any of the Apple Cyrillic fonts (the original used PriamojProp and apparently there's no OS X font with this name).

I was advised by Apple Care to save the files as some other kind of file (I forget Classic's built-in text editor) but that didn't work either).

How can I read and edit these files in OS 10.4.6?

Mac Mini (Intel), Mac OS X (10.4.6), , Wall Street Powerbook (OS 9.1)

It's not a question of fonts, but encodings. OS X uses Unicode, OS 9 used MacCyrillic. In TextEdit, make sure you are in Plain Text mode, and in the Open dialogue at the bottom where can choose the encoding select Cyrillic (Mac). If that doesn't work, you can also try Cyrillic (ISO) or (Windows) or (KOI8).
