My ipad is asking for a passcode yet i have never set one

Has anyone got any idea if there's a default passcode as I have never set one myself. I have tried many simple codes i.e. 1234 but nothing seems to work

iPad 3G, iOS 5.1.1

Hi I have been locked out of I phone after up date asking for code even thou I never put one on.
