iTunes will not back up my devices

When I hook up either my iPad or iPhone to iTunes, it starts to back up the device, but after about 5-10min of it looking like it's working correctly, I get an error message saying "an error has occured and can not back up your device". What do I do?

iPad 2, iOS 6.1.2
