"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package ..." error messages when installing iTunes for Windows 7 64bit

I was promted to upgrade to the new itunes version today (11.0.2.26), but wish I never had as the previous version worked just fine!! I have been unable to install the new version and keep getting the message about there being a problem with the Windows Installer package. I tried following the instructions on this support pages on removing all Apple programs but that didn't work either!! I have Windows 7 64 bit and am close to throwing my PC out of the window!! Quicktime will not re-install correctly either...

Any suggestions will be most gratefully received 🙂

Doublechecking, Auntie. What's the second sentence of your particular error message? (Precise text, please.)

Hi AuntieT,

I have tried everything said above, especially the "B Noir," but only managed to complete the iTunes installation. After the installation, it wont open now (iTunes).

I am now interested in finding out how to fix the Microsoft compatibility issue you mention here.

Kindly assist.

From the programs and features control panel start by attempting to repair Apple Software Update, then try installing iTunes again. If that doesn't work read on...

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to anolder version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If the issue persists and you have a 64-bit system try the for older video cards version which is a 64-bit installer for mostly 32-bit code, similar to all 64-bit versions of iTunes up to 12.1.

If you've tried the above without success then see the method in Install missing components. What component fails to install, and what error message does it give? See this post for steps to produce detailed logs of the installation which may reveal why iTunes won't install. Look for words like failed or error.

Hi All,

It turned out the issue was my OS. I was still on Windows 7, and not on Service Pack 1. After applying the Windows Service Pack 1, iTunes works perffectly as it should. I had changed machines and had been recently issued with a new one, that came without the service pack.

Thanks,

After I deleted the "AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi" through the WinRar folder and ran the "iTunes6464.msi" it installed all the way through. Upon launch of the program it error-ed stating it was missing something (sorry I didn't grab it for detail). I went back into the WinRar folder and installed the remaining files "AppleAplicatioSupport.msi" AppleAplicationsSupport64.msi" and "AppleMobileDeviceSupport646.msi" . This time at launch it fully loaded and was good to use.

Thank you B Noir and gregproulx001 !
