Should I Uninstall Aperture and iPhoto? warning-long and complicated!

Due to trying to combine 2 libraries from 2 different computers, and trying to relocate masters, I've created a bit of a cluster, shall we say. I first ended up with 7,000 images on my desktop that i didn't allow aperture to locate originals. of course i didn't realize this was happening until after the fact. then i couldn't empty my trash after putting a couple old backups in it. then my finder stopping responding and i couldn't empty the trash, couldn't remove any of the files from the desktop, and on and on. tried to get into the finder window/destop via the mail app-it was the only way the finder window would open and delete the files that way. no luck. finally just went to the genius bar, and they were kind enough to take a little extra time and hooked up to their network and deleted all the crap off the desktop.

The problem now, is that Aperture keeps crashing, and iPhoto keeps wanting to update thumbnails. Can't really move about or do anything in Aperture AT all now.

I have repaired permissions, repaired the library, and am now trying a rebuild. If this doesn't work, i think my only option is to start over. i do have a good backup of Aperture/iPhoto will all files intact on an EHD.

Phew....hope this makes sense, and looking for guidance if possible. If I do need to start over, would I just uninstall Aperture, and iPhoto, then re-download them, or just drag and drop the backup from the EHD and that will work?

thanks so much to any "helpers"! 🙂

It appears that the bulk of the referenced images are iPhoto originals and are labeled as such in the inspector. They are typically part of an "event". I understand the organization in aperture is "projects" and not "events" but why can't these be managed images in aperture ? Some photos are blank so I assume I deleted originals and perhaps copies exist somewhere? Phew... Hope to figure this out! :)

Can it be, that some of the iPhoto events you imported have already been imported as referenced in iPhoto? If you accidentally unchecked "Importing: Copy items into the iPhoto Library" when you imported your photos to iPhoto, they will have been imported as referenced and not as managed, and they will stay referenced, when importing the iPhoto library into Aperture. If the image files, that are referenced by iPhoto, are no longer available, the images will show as blank (offline or missing) in Aperture.

Sorry, i am confused..when the photos in question were imported, i only had iphoto to work with. no aperture on my system. did you mean when i imported them into aperture?

after i consolidated as corky told me what was left were 1955 "referenced" images in aperture. not sure where to go from here. Some of the 1955 are copys of iphoto originals. if i view the 1955 in iphoto, are they then full resolution and can be exported/edited elsewhere?

thanks! 🙂

No, I meant when you imported the photos into iPhoto. iPhoto also has the option to import referenced or managed. The problem is, this not documented very well, and usually people are accidentally importing as referenced, not because they intentionally want to have a referenced iPhoto Library.

ok, that may be why i was confused if most people don't know about it. 😉

what i recall is the dialog box that asks what option to use when a camera or card reader is attached to your computer and i said to import into iphoto. (7 years ago) Unless the default is "referenced", then they would have been imported as managed. since i started using aperture, thats where all my photos are imported to from the start.

where do i go from here? would i somehow have to access every available backup i have on my external drives to try and reconnect the images? i just am not up for that, if that's the case. my photo library is for personal use only, i scrapbook, do altered art, mini-albums, gifts, teach-software for an electronic die cutting system. so nothing that's being judged, or sold as a professional photo. my goal is to consolidate as much as possible and use aperture to its potential once i become more adept at using it. But, not to the point a professional or even serious amatuer would use it. my favorite thing is non-destructive edits. HOnestly...since i got an iphone 5, i tend to use that more than my dslr lately! it's just handy and always with me! 🙂

Leonie said:To be able to reconnect them, you need to find the original image files or copies of them. If there is really no hope of finding the originals, I'd export the versions you still have by dragging them from the Browser to a folder on your Desktop. This will create jpeg files of them. Then delete them from the library and reimport the versions from your Desktop. This way you will have new versions with low resolution originals - not as good as reconnecting to the originals, but your 1955 images can be part of your Aperture library without causing problems.

Leonie-will the files I then import from the desktop be of an even lower resolution than prior to dragging them out, or is the purpose to have the 1955 images then be originals to have an all original aperture library to work with? Hope I'm making sense! :) thank u!

What I meant is - turn the versions you are dragging from the browser into new originals by importing them. When reimported as new originals, they will have exactly the quality you see after dragging them to your Desktop.

And yes, that should give you an "All Managed" library, provided you import with the "Store files" opton set to "In the Aperture Library".

Good Luck

Perfect! Thank you. This will be my last step in getting my MBP back up. Thankfully I had everything backed up prior to the "geniuses" getting there hands on it! :) ( actually they have been quite helpful in the past, so I shouldn't dog them!:))

It was so nice to be able to drag my docs, etc back. Also, the sharing capability came in very handy with iTunes-I was able to import it over wifi! Apple has come a long way with transferring music between devices over the years. Used to be a nightmare!
