Should I Uninstall Aperture and iPhoto? warning-long and complicated!

It appears that the bulk of the referenced images are iPhoto originals and are labeled as such in the inspector. They are typically part of an "event". I understand the organization in aperture is "projects" and not "events" but why can't these be managed images in aperture ? Some photos are blank so I assume I deleted originals and perhaps copies exist somewhere? Phew... Hope to figure this out! :)

Can it be, that some of the iPhoto events you imported have already been imported as referenced in iPhoto? If you accidentally unchecked "Importing: Copy items into the iPhoto Library" when you imported your photos to iPhoto, they will have been imported as referenced and not as managed, and they will stay referenced, when importing the iPhoto library into Aperture. If the image files, that are referenced by iPhoto, are no longer available, the images will show as blank (offline or missing) in Aperture.

Sorry, i am confused..when the photos in question were imported, i only had iphoto to work with. no aperture on my system. did you mean when i imported them into aperture?

after i consolidated as corky told me what was left were 1955 "referenced" images in aperture. not sure where to go from here. Some of the 1955 are copys of iphoto originals. if i view the 1955 in iphoto, are they then full resolution and can be exported/edited elsewhere?

ok, that may be why i was confused if most people don't know about it. 😉

what i recall is the dialog box that asks what option to use when a camera or card reader is attached to your computer and i said to import into iphoto. (7 years ago) Unless the default is "referenced", then they would have been imported as managed. since i started using aperture, thats where all my photos are imported to from the start.

where do i go from here? would i somehow have to access every available backup i have on my external drives to try and reconnect the images? i just am not up for that, if that's the case. my photo library is for personal use only, i scrapbook, do altered art, mini-albums, gifts, teach-software for an electronic die cutting system. so nothing that's being judged, or sold as a professional photo. my goal is to consolidate as much as possible and use aperture to its potential once i become more adept at using it. But, not to the point a professional or even serious amatuer would use it. my favorite thing is non-destructive edits. HOnestly...since i got an iphone 5, i tend to use that more than my dslr lately! it's just handy and always with me! 🙂

Leonie-will the files I then import from the desktop be of an even lower resolution than prior to dragging them out, or is the purpose to have the 1955 images then be originals to have an all original aperture library to work with? Hope I'm making sense! :) thank u!

Perfect! Thank you. This will be my last step in getting my MBP back up. Thankfully I had everything backed up prior to the "geniuses" getting there hands on it! :) ( actually they have been quite helpful in the past, so I shouldn't dog them!:))

It was so nice to be able to drag my docs, etc back. Also, the sharing capability came in very handy with iTunes-I was able to import it over wifi! Apple has come a long way with transferring music between devices over the years. Used to be a nightmare!
