With Word 2011, you have three ways of doing this:
(1) from the Word "Insert" menu, select Photo ... and then select Photo Browser. If things work properly here, you'll see all your iPhoto photos displayed and you can scroll through them and select the one you want.
(2) Perhaps easier, but not as elegant, from within iPhoto you can export the photo to a convenient folder as a .jpg file. Then, from the Word "Insert" menu, select Photo ... and then select Picture From File and navigate to that folder with your exported .jpg file and choose it.
(3) Maybe even easier, from within iPhoto, select the photo, choose COPY, then go to Word and PASTE the copied image directly into the Word document.

Thanks, Steve. the No. 1 suggestion works. No. 3 does not. Appreciate your help.
Actually, the number 3 suggestion does work, it is just not as obvious as the usual copy/paste. First of all, in order to copy the picture in Iphoto, you must be viewing the picture among all the other pictures within that album. If you double click the photo so that it enlarges for editing, you cannot copy it. Anyway, once you have selected the album the picture is in, click the picture once so that it is outlined. Next, go up to the Edit menue and select copy, or press command + c. Then, in word, select paste in the edit menue. This is the easiest way to transfer pictures.
None of these work. I can click 'copy', but then the menu with 'paste' is grayed out so I can't paste it into a document. What do I do now? Settings in Word, maybe? And which ones?
Yes, number 3 doesn't work for me either. That's what I tried before coming here.
Also, I tried number 1, but my photos don't show up in the pop up box.
I'll try number 2 but this looks like a pretty blatant bug to me.
This is exactly what is happening to me. Bleh.
This wouldn't work for me - the paste function was greyed out in Word. However, I could paste into the Pages app, and then copy and paste into Word from there. Doh!
This thread has been going for sometime and things have changed but it's near the top of the list on Google so here goes -
I'm using Yosemite and Word 2007
I'm making up the Order of Service for my mother in law 's funeral so really needed to get this problem solved.
My word document is in a folder, so make up and put your document into a folder. Make a copy(just in case) of the photo in iPhoto. Click on it and then in 'File' click on Export and export it to your made up folder. You can drag and drop it from there into your open word doc where it can be manipulated as required or you can Import it in your word document from the folder.
Well it worked for me hope it does for you.
Great ideas but didn't work. Here's what I finally did and it worked..awkward! Select photo from Photos...send to Apple mail app as if you are going to send photo in an email. Click on photo and select copy image.
Open Word document and select 'Paste"...voila...and you can copy photo to printer too...which was what I wanted to do.
It worked!! THX!
