Exporting Large Voice Memos without a computer

I am writing this on behalf of a close friend who owns an iPhone 4. She is using Apple's Voice Memos app to make voice recordings. Last week, she recorded an hour long meeting using that app. The problem is, when she tried to export to Email or Messages, an error dialog appears that says it cannot be done. Obviously, Voice Memos is imposing an export restriction based on filesize. Sadly, it is impossible to know what that restriction is, nor does the app show what the file size of individual recordings are.

I have read that getting large files out of Voice Memos is a simple matter of connecting the iPhone to a computer and firing up iTunes. But my friend, believe it or not, does not have a computer of her own at home. And although it is possible for her to borrow time on someone else's computer, she would prefer to have the ability to solve this problem on her own, and without the need to buy a computer only for this task.

Yes, I am well aware of DropVox, which is a Voice Recording app that will save directly to DropBox. But that does not help my friend get her large voice memo files out of the Voice Memos app. Furthermore, when I helped her install the DropBox app on her iPhone, I was disgusted to see that there is no way to export saved files from Voice Memos to DropBox! (Please spare me the "just send Feedback to Apple" suggestion, as that does not solve my friend's immediate problem).

And so I ask you, without a computer, and without jailbreaking the iPhone 4 my friend owns, how can she get her large saved voice memos out of the Voice Memo app and into DropBox (or an email, or some other place where she can share them)?

I look forward to your replies.

Thank you,

James

Thanks this really worked, at first I was freaking out because it took a long time. I went to icloud.com and then to mail and download it from there (it was faster for some reason than using mail app on my mac). Just be patient it took me like 15 or 20mins for it to sync with icloud when I saved it as a draft from my phone and for it to appear in my computer. If you download it from icloud.com>mail it will be in your downloads, but if you decided to dl it from the mail.app you have to search it with spotlight.

I found a really simple workaround to this problem if the file is too large and fails to email.

Go to the voice memo and click on share.

Click email.

Then click cancel.

Click save to drafts.

Go to that email accounts draft folder and the message will be there.

Send it to yourself (it will send within the native email app)

Access on your computer.

Hope this helps.

So, after encountering the problem of accidentally trusting another computer and thereafter being unable to sync music and voice messages without DELETING them all from the iPhone (why, oh Apple, why?), I tried many things, including a trip to the Genius bar and asking many employees for assistance. One thought that a third party software iExplore might do it, but was not sure. No good solution was offered.

What did work, however, was breaking up the large and long (over 22 minute voices memos) by successively using the TRIM function available in the EDIT feature in voice memos. By selecting a 20 minute portion of the whole memo using the trim feature, I was able to save it as a bite-size part of the whole. Incidentally, be sure to test and fully understand how the TRIM function works and be sure to use the save options so that you don't overwrite the original source. Make sure to email all the segments before deleting the original and segments from the iPhone.

In any event, by breaking a large voice memo up into parts, I was able to then e-mail the individual parts and thus get the parts saved on to my computer. It's a little tedious, but it appears to have worked.

Again, be sure to understand the TRIM save options and make separate copies of each segment, preferably with a name that tells you which segment it is with respect to the whole. One of the save options will over-write the original and thus should avoided in this context. Also, some segment overlap is probably best, as it is better to have too much than to miss a part of the whole via omission. I name the segment parts based on the minute in which it ends, thus allowing me to know the order. (E.g. a 60 minute file001 becomes three segments, file001copy20, file001copy40, file001copy60)

Hi,

Although recording a meeting for personal usage is subject to privacy and ethical arguments, here's one possible solution (I have recorded conversations and songs sung by friends through this method. They are about 30MB in compressed size for a 50 minute session):

Note: (you'll need to have the evernote app with your account signed in for this):

1. Share the voice memo to evernote

2. Open that note on the evernote app

3. Use the share option from the bottom right "..." options (iOS8.1)

4. Send it to your email.

The voice note comes as the attachment in .m4a format.

Again : Please consider the ethics before using such recordings.

I have this exact same problem, the majority of my memos don't even appear, but the app crashes after about 45 seconds.

Now, My memos were very important that I get them from my phone, so the solution to getting the physical files is getting a third party manager, I used iFunBox and then go into the phone's file system to retrieve the files, which are not named correctly, but instead a string of numbers.

I don't know of a solution for the in-app problem, but if you really need your files, you can get them back.

Good luck!

Just use iTunes to backup iPhone voice memos. First, you need to install iTunes on your iPhone or computer .Then connect the iPhone to your computer with the Apple Lightning to USB cable or via Wi-Fi (you can use iTunes on iPhone device directly). Next, open iTunes. Look at the top menu bar and choose the Music option. Check the "Sync voice memos" box. At this point your voice memos and notes will begin downloading to your iTunes Library.

I just searched google for "SEND IPHONE VOICE MEMO TO DRIVE" and was directed here. While reading your post I noticed that the options under the voice memo share icon have a "MORE" button. I switched on the Drive option and was able to save my memo right where I wanted it. Not sure if that will help anyone or not, but thought I would let you know what worked for me without a hack.

Hi there Sharynjo!

First off I cant be more grateful for this stroke of luck I found in your post. Pure solid GOLD of useful info that actually worked after going through useless apps like SHAREIT, DropVox and many others. After 3 years of my iphone 4 not connecting to my updated itunes on my macbook, I just gave up and couldnt believe apple hadnt found a way to do this without itunes, AND without the use of a cable, but over Wifi (iMSG in this case for me). I had backed up everything but my voice memos, which are in the GIG's (32GB iphone 4) and ive been stranded with this set since then. NO connectivity to itunes whatsoever for 3 years!!! Until noww =DDDDDD

Anyways, I tried a sample file, something small like 8 mins, and good lord in heavens it WORKED!!!!! Atleast I can move it from one device to another via iCloud iMSG. The next step is easy, wihch I have yet to try is to use AnyTrans for Voice Memos from my iOS(5s)-to-PC, since I have my 4s and 5s on the same cloud ID this iMSG thing was a few clicks away, but the wait time (perhaps over a slow wifi network) was abit even for a small 8 minute file.

So far so good, now to move this somehow in BULK. one-by-one will take time, and I dont mind that since I unknowingly waited 3 years and stumbled upon your post. THank you and God bless you and the person whoeer he/she may be that had the OCD/ADHD to figure this out. Im finally at peace and have started the transfer from my iphone 4 to iCloud ID (goes to 5s directly) and then I'll move them in one batch from the 5s to PC, and finally get to wipe the 4 clean. I'm stuck on iOS 7.1.1 on the iphone 4, and it hasnt connected to any iTunes (updated or not) not a ****'s worth! FIrst I thought it was faulty cables (after going through pyramids of posts and I just lost my mind, no leads, ending at dead ends everywhere. Even the new cable I got an original from a friend in the U.S, that didnt reslolve my issues. I've been through **** and back to backup my stuff and now Voice Memos are being migrated off this brick FINALLY. I want to reset it and see if it starts to act normal and connect to itunes or not. If not, im chucking it without anyone ever really knwing what particular problem this iphone had and a solution would have been noteworthy with regards to the iphone 4 not being detected by iTunes under any circumstance.

This is a heartfelt THANK YOU and GOD BLESS YOU to whoever figured this simple thing out.

Have a bloody amazing weekend! I knnow I will!!! =D

peace.

I had this issue too! I use voice memos to record my classes and an app called SpeedUp Pro to replay them at varying speeds and move forwards/backwards by preset time periods. I am presently traveling without my computer. Yet I wanted to play some of my voice memos.

Seeing this thread, I used the share button to find a "Import with SpeedUp Pro" option! Voila! I now have the Voice Memo to playback on my preferred app, without the hassle of a computer/itunes/ etc.

Of course, over time, I will use the conventional itunes route.

I also noticed lots of options to save / upload to cloud based services such as iCloud Drive, Google Drive, OneDrive, and so much more. I guess, between the first post and now, much has happened in the digital world with regard to cloud based sharing!

Hope this was useful!
