iTunes 12 - A Wish List

I've been watching the debates about iTunes11 and thought I'd start a slightly more positive thread;

(that said, I have already downgraded back to 10.7 and will stay with that until iTunes 12 starts to catch up with iTunes 10.7)

So what should iTunes12 have?

obviously, there'll be a lot of people with CoverFlow at the top of their Christmas list.

bring back the album art preview, and the ability to click it and have it open full size.

being able to open a playlist in a separate window is also high on the list.

fix the search facility so it's not backwards.

bring back DJ view

find duplicates (i think they've put that back already, but I'm still in 10.7)

make the interface look more like a new Apple product, and less like a 1985 Apple product (or 2008 windows product)

get rid of Composer's View? ;-)

what else?

none of these 'up'grades fixes a fundamental problem that has been bugging me for ages. does no-one else have this problem?

but i need to explain;

i go out with my iPhone. i listen to some songs that i like and some songs that i don't like (which i promptly delete), and i hear a song that i like somewhere else , so i buy it on iTunes.

nothing unusual there then.

later, i'm on my iMac and listening to some music. again, i hear something i like and something i don't like.

i delete the one i don't like.

i plug my iPhone into my iMac. as soon as its connected, i get a message saying "iTunes has found purchased songs on your iPhone that are not on this Mac, do i want to transfer these items from this iPhone back to your iTunes Library?"

which songs???

i don't know whether it means songs I've purchased on the phone, which should now be imported onto the mac, or whether its referring to the phone copy of songs i've recently deleted from the Mac!

please can it show me a list???!!!

  1. MANAGING SONGS/SYNCING FROM MULTIPLE COMPUTERS TO AND FROM MY iPHONE. This functionality is waaaaaayyyy overdue. For the love of Pete, I own $5,000 worth of Apple hardware between two computers and my iPhone. I should be able to move my music between them just like Windows/Android users can do with systems that cost far less. This feature isn't added in time for my next iPhone purchase, I'm moving on.
  2. MORE iCLOUD STORAGE. I have a massive music library. I'll pay more, let me store more!
  3. COVER ART. I'd like to be able to choose my own artwork that represents each Artist and the *option* to turn off the band photos that iTunes inserts.
  4. COVER ART. Where iTunes is not asked to use the afforementioned band photo, I'd like to choose the album cover to represent the band in question. eg. if it's the Rolling Stones, I want to use Sticky Fingers as opposed to iTunes selecting an album cover for me.
  5. COVER ART. Give me back the ability to use large images for cover art!
  6. CUSTOM INFO FIELD(S). I'm a tagging nerd. Give me info fields that I can tag or otherwise customise. A "Label" field (for the record label that releases the artist/album) would be very useful as well.
  7. iTUNES STORE. I want to search by record label. For example, I am a Jazz freak and want to buy more stuff released in Impulse or Verve... I'd like to be able to search the store that way.

Some of the features you are looking for can already be done.

COVER ART - When you import an album (or song), right click on the art work you do not want (in album view), select "Clear downloaded artwork". Then right click on the album cover again and select 'Get info'. You can double click on the art work box and upload the artwork you want which would be somewhere on your computer. The whole process takes a few seconds.

SEARCH FOR RECORD LABEL - Since this isn't a field they provide, and since the fields are not customizable, you can either 1) create a playlist for Impulse and/or Verve and slide your imported songs into the proper playlist (I do this with Motown, Stax, and a few other labels). and/or 2) use a field that you would never use (eg KIND) as your label field and you can even make it show up in the songs view by checking it - so you can sort by label and choose what you want to listen to easily.

Hope this helps.

I hated 11 for a long time and went back to 10.7 for 6 months. I have been on 11 for some months now and actually don't mind it all. It does exactly what I want it to do ( never used coverflow ).

I think the only thing that comes to mind is a way of auto rating tracks based on play counts etc, that would be a neat feature. I used to use AutoRate app but it's either so outdated or my library is too large it started to hang and I was worried about it corrupting the library so stopped using it.

All in all I'm quite content with 11. There doesn't seem to be anything I cannot do that I did in 10.7 now that it is stable. Not had any crashes and not missing any functionality.
