Ipod is locked. What do I do?

My 7 year old locked his hand-me-down Ipod 2nd generation touch because he forgot the password and put enough wrong ones into it until it locked.

The screen says Ipod Disabled, Connect to itunes.

I made an apple account, then an itunes account, but it pops up on the comp screen that it is locked and to put the password into the Ipod.

The ipod won't let me do that.
