"This message has not been downloaded from the server" - Multiple devices all using Exchange Active Sync

We are having this issue across multiple IOS devices ranging from IOS version 5.x up to the latest 6.1.2. Many (not all) emails sent to the devices are unreadable and simply state: "This message has not been downloaded from the server". Microsoft believes this to be some sort of bug with the IOS devices in the way they are handling the SSL encryption.

Facts:

- Devices are connected to an Exchange 2010 SP1 Rollup 6 via Active Sync (No POP3, IMAP or SMTP)

- issue occurs on multiple IOS devices within the organization ranging from IOS 5.x up to the latest 6.1.2

- Issue occurs on both external cellular data and internal wireless networks

- Not all emails sent to the devices result in the error, but issue does tend to occur more frequently from certain senders/domains

- Using the same user account on an android phone does not result in an issue (even when receiving the exactly same email that has been sent to the IOS devices)

- Closing mail app / rebooting device does not resolve the issue

- Doesn't appear to matter what the mesage format is (can be html, plaintext, etc)

- Spent nearly 7 hours with Microsoft going through the Exchange server configuration and looking for possible causes. None have been found and all testing indicates things are setup correctly.

- This is not a case of Issue 2.3 listed here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2563324 (verified by Microsoft Support)

- If we disable SSL on the IOS device and connect via plain HTTP the messages are displayed correctly!

- If we use a different SSL certificate, the issue still occurs - so not a problem with the original cert.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what would cause this? Does the ISO devices have any sort of log that would indicate why it's reporting this error? The current error is pretty unhelpful.

You will never get an answer from Apple they are experts at blaming other people and ignoring their customers. Recommendation is to buy another brand if you want customer support. Email not working is actually a new feature provided by Apple, its a form of Artificial Intelligence as you really did not need that information.

It is for sure not the internet service provider. I have my own email and don't use a local provider, so that logic is invalid. I did put in a bug complaint to Apple about this, hopefully everyone is so the problem is addressed (and fixed). Pretty much, what I have found, is that my emails will stay on my device until I check my email on my home computer. At that point my emails are pushed to that computer which is the final destination from the server. It took me a while to realize I was even having a problem because I don't log into my home computer that often. At that point the emails on my iPhone will have the error message.

I solved this by installing Microsoft Outlook. Just lost most of my emails and sick of Apples garbage software. Do poeple realise how frequent they are doing bug fixes now for their poor software. I use Chrome for browsing, Outlook for Email, Google maps for directions. Would be could if you could remove all the Apple apps from the phone. Next time it will be an Android phone. I have been using my Google Tablet for emails since this has happened but Outlook is great.

Good work Microsoft and Google. Apples are Lemons.

I appreciate all of the suggestions but the problem persists. I've given up trying to sort out apple's native client.

That such a problem with e-mail occurs is understandable, the programming is no doubt daunting.

The fact that apple didn't immediately fix the issue is aggravating. How could apple be so indifferent to one of the primary web services? Why isn't this a top priority for apple?

The fact that the problem has persisted for so long is unforgivable. I might as well go back to doing battle with Microsoft's product line of flawed products.

I downloaded Altamail for $4 and so far it works great. It is a bit over-kill for my basic needs but it also handles my personal POP e-mail domain; as far as I can tell, it's the only iPad client that does.

I have found if I don't check my emails on my home computer, and only check online (my means while at work), the messages will stay on my iPhone. I need to change the setup on my computer so it is not the final destination for my emails while this is a problem. This way they will stay on the server (and my iPhone) until this problem is fixed. If this is an option for other users out there, it may be a temporary fix. I do have to mention that I have my own email and website through 1&1, I am not using a google or hotmail (etc.) account. I am not sure how it works for those people.

I actually hadn't logged into my home computer in several days, and had no problems with emails on my phone. Just to test, I logged in last night to see what would happen when they downloaded from the server. Sure enough the emails on my phone started giving me the dreaded message later that evening.

I had considered trying this but why should we be seeking temporary fixes? Apple products are supposed to be of superior quality, it seems absurd that its customers are trying to find work-arounds for such a basic flaw that Apple should have sorted out months ago.

Besides, I don't want e-mails taking up memory on my mobile devices and don't wish to pay extra cloud memory for the accumulating e-mails. That's what I have a PC for.

My Altamail solution is working well, I'm sure I will stick to that, no matter what Apple chooses to do, or more likely not do, with their native e-mail client.

I also moved over to Altamail, as was using Outlook.com as an alias. I tried myMail but is is garbage. It is supposed to work with POP3 but it just fails. I called support and a week later and they can't fix it. But Altamail is great; better than Apples client.

So the solution I did use was to use Outlook on iPhone and then sign up an Outlook.com accent that does read pop 3 for you and store you emails. A more complex but alternate solution. However Outlook ***** battery on the iPhone......Using Altamail is simpler.

I have found the problem is probably due to Apple having a bug in their pop 3 code, but not willing to fix it, as everyone is moving to IMAP, they probably don't want to help those customers as its not economic for them. POP makes no sense these days, however if you have a backward ISP like me, Telstra, you have no choice. So IMAP keeps all your email on the server and POP doesn't, so they probably moved their code over to support the IMAP model but stuffed up the old POP code.

To test this theory has anyone lost emails using IMAP ?

There is a lengthy discussion of this topic here:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7221489?start=255&tstart=0

In summary, there is a bug introduced by Apple in iOS 9 (and not fixed in any release up to 9.1) that means it does not handle POP accounts properly. It is a random problem affecting both received e-mails (where the content can disappear, confusingly often between 12-24 hours after initial viewing) and also sent e-mails (where attachments can go missing in the same way).

Apple have admitted to the problem but there is no date for a fix.
