iTunes wants me to restore my iPhone to get out of recovery mode (I was trying to install the latest iPhone update- which failed for some reason.) My voicemails are stored on my iPhone. Will i lose my voicemails if i restore my phone? If so, how can I keep my voicemails as they are very important to me.

The data on your phone is gone....with visual voicemail, the voicemails are removed from your carrier's servers & downloaded/stored on your phone. So, to restore them requires restoring from a backup that contains them. If not in the backup you restore from, they are gone.
Most likely no. Carriers automatically delete this stuff from their servers anyway. But with visual voicemail, it gets stored on your phone.
As I provided, you've already lost all of the data on your phone...its gone. If you don't have a backup that contains this data, its gone.
If your phone is now in recovery mode...it is, you've already lost all data on your phone. If not in a backup you restore from, its gone.
Excellent question. I don't think they will be deleted as I'm pretty sure they're stored on your carrier's servers, not on your iPhone.
I'm fairly certain they are stored on the carriers servers, so they are not lost if he restores it.
Thanks for your reply, RyanDolan123. I have backed up somewhat recently. All photos are backed up and music is backed up and stored on iCloud, so it's really just the voicemails I'm concerned about.
FYI:
iPhone automatically downloads your voicemail messages from the carrier's voice mail server and stores them in the phone's memory.
I will contact my carrier to see if they can confirm for me. If they do not store them on their server - am I screwed?

"Visual voicemail" meaning when I can see the list of voicemails and scroll them under the "voicemail" tab under the Phone application?
