I get the following message upon starting iTunes:
iTunes can’t verify the identity of the server “ax.itunes.apple.com”.
The certificate for this server is invalid. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be “ax.itunes.apple.com”, which could put your confidential information at risk. Would you like to connect to the server anyway?
Any ideas?

Try clearing the cache in iTunes>preferences>Advanced. I did and also reset warnings and it went away.
TRIED THIS BUT STILL SHOWS "ERROR" MESSAGE WHEN OPENING ITUNES.

I called Apple Support, under software update, updated iTunes from 10.6.2 to 10.6.3 and the problem went away.

Same problem here with iTunes 10.4. I have no desire to update. Deselecting 'Check for updates automatically' in Prefs > General stopped the alert notice.

This message keeps popping up and I have no idea how to get rid of it- resetting the cache and warnings didn't do anything, and I cannot update the itunes as well (it's my mother's laptop, not mine). I don't know if this message/problem is affecting the update because three times I've tried to update it for her so she could connect her iPhone to her iTunes and it's not updating and picking up her phone.... I'm frustrated and very confused as to why this isn't work :/ does anyone have any idea what I could try?

I also have this problem, am on MacOS 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.4 (8). I have deselected Check for updates automatically, also reset warnings and reset cache. The message does not come up unless I go to Check for updates, then message comes up and if I click on 'continue' I get a message "The iTunes update server could not be contacted. Please check your Internet connection, or try again later." How can I update? Any ideas?

had the same problem, unchecked, check for new software automatically under preferences, worked!!
Was able to update, not in itunes but in mac, updated everything from mac and message no longer comes up.
I had the same problem with iTunes 10 on iOS 10.6.8
I went to apple.com, downloaded iTunes 11.0.2 (not using Updates in iTunes) and the problem seems to have gone away.
Just hoping I don't have any problems with my library now that I have a new version of iTunes!!
