I am trying to update my mac to os x snow leopard but the cd won't run on my computer. I'm using an external dvd hardrive but I don't see why that would make a difference in wether or not it runs.
Where did you obtain the DVD. Is it a retail version or one that shipped with another computer?
I'm not sure, my mom got it for me. would it have any indication on the box?

Ok, that should be the correct DVD. Can you check the info about your computer by going to the Apple logo in the top left corner and selecting "About this Mac". What does it state for OS X version and Processor?

Processor 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Again, that does meet the requirements. I do have a couple more questions though.
From the same screen as the previous info was obtained, how much RAM is installed? (Snow Leopard needs 1gB)
Do other DVDs play in this external player?

If you click the Apple logo and select "About this Mac" the screen will show the OS X version, Processor speed/type and amount of RAM. It will show as ???gB of 667mHz RAM.
it says 521mb that's how much I have left right?
Well, that may be the cause of the no install problem, as Snow Leopard does require at least 1gB of RAM. The Apple link below will show how it is installed.
