My Mac Book Pro does not recognize the presence of a DVD or CD

Ever since I upgraded my MacBook Pro, it does not recognize a DVD or CD of any type when I put it in. I have a store bought DVD, the Social Network, which worked fine before upgrading to OSX operating system. Music CD's were okay then, too. Now, neither is even recognized by the player. Thought maybe it needed to be reloaded, but na't figure out how to do that. This is very frustrating, and makes me start to second guess my decision to switch to an Apple product. I've only hd this computer about 18 months, did the upgrade last September (?) and have had difficulties ever since. HELP me please!!!

MacBook Pro, iOS 6.1.2, using OSX

Just wanted to let everyone know, I went to the "genius bar" today. They ran all the tests they could think of, and determined the only fix was to replace the optial drive, which had less than 10 hours of use on it, if that much. While it fixed the problem for a mere $164, the 'mode' they left my computer in initially scared me to death, as it appeared they had wiped all my files, like pictures, i-pod music, etc.

2 restarts and all reappeared. No longer truly trusting those folks like I thought I could.

Thank you for all of the patience and assistance I recieved here, I am truly grateful for all the suggestions. I would come here again before I visit the genius bar.
