hiya!

during Quicktime installation I got an -3 error

the -3 is normally an itunes installation error (meaning something unspecified went wrong with the QT part of the install). did you download the QT from the "QuickTime 7.1 with iTunes 6 for Windows 2000/XP" link? (that actually leads to an itunes/QT installer bundle rather than a true standalone QT installer.)

we'll try is a careful standalone QT 7.1 reinstall.

download and save a copy of the QT 7.1 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.

Quicktime 7.1 Standalone Installer

if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?

(if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

okay. we're going to completely scrape out all your existing QuickTime and itunes and do a careful staged reinstall.

preliminaries

download and save to your hard drive copies of these two installers (don't install them just yet):

Quicktime 7.1 Standalone Installer

iTunes 6.0.4.2 Installer

... and download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility (we're going to use it during the uninstall stage of proceedings):

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

uninstall phase

switch off antispyware and antivirus applications prior to any uninstalls.

use the complete uninstallation instructions in the following document to completely remove your QT and itunes program files:

Trouble installing iPod, iTunes, or QuickTime software in Windows

if you run into trouble on one of the installs, use the Installer CleanUp utility to clear the installation configuration for that program, and then use the uninstallation instructions as a guide for manual removal of any leftover program files and folders.

even if you don't run into trouble, after you've completed the uninstalls run CleanUp anyway to check for any leftover QT or itunes installation configuration information. if you find any, remove it.

reboot the PC.

reinstall phase

switch off antivirus and antispyware prior to any installs.

first install the standalone QuickTime. reboot.
then install itunes. reboot.

do those installs go through okay? if so, does your itunes launch properly afterwards?

I was having trouble with iTunes crashing when I launched, so I followed the instructions you gave for uninstalling iTunes and QuickTime.

Next, I attempted to install QT with the standalone installer and I got this error:

==============================

Error Number: 0x80040707
Description: DLL function call crashed: QTInstallCode.QuickTimePostInstallProc

Setup will now terminate.

Any ideas on this issue? FYI, I'm running the x64 version of windows...is there any compatibility issue there? I was running iTunes just fine before trying to upgrade...

hi Nicholas!

I'm running the x64 version of windows...is there any compatibility issue there?

gaaah. yes i'm afraid there is. x64 version users are currently having that problem when they try to install or run QT 7.1 on a PC which has Windows Update KB908531 installed on it. (and having a non-functional QT breaks itunes.)

for some more information on that one, see Sim Alam's threads in the "QuickTime for Windows" forum, or do a search on "KB908531" in "Installing & Upgrading iTunes for Windows".

I have an ibook G4 with the latest version of itunes and tiger.

I have tried to open itunes and the tool bar indicates with the small black arrow that the program is running, however it will not open on my screen and I am unable to use it for music.

I have tried to force quit, and that does not solve the problem. i have tried to download itunes again to reinstall it, but when i get to the part to select what directory to install itunes, i am unable to choose anything and my hard drive is not recognized.

Does anyone have any advice? I am also new to macs as well...just a pc convert.

hi LauraJ1974!

when i click on the itunes icon
or go to the music store, service agreement pops up and then disappears,

are you getting no error messages whatsoever? are you seeing something similar if you try to launch your QuickTime? (a brief flash of a screen, and then nothing?)

if so, check for a Qoologic adware infestation on the PC. the free trial version of Ewido has been catching and killing that for most folks:
