Can't find server

For the past few days, I've been having trouble using the internet. It works fine for awhile, then I get the "Safari can't find the server..." error when I try to load a new page. It's started out happening on Safari here and there, but then Mail wouldn't find the server. Now I'm occassionally getting the "you are not connected to the internet" error. It also affects iPhones on the same network. There's definitely a problem with the network/router, but I'm not sure what it is. My internet service itself is fine; pages load perfectly when plugged into the modem via ethernet.

As I said before, the problem is happening with 3 different computers (2 MacBooks and an iMac) all running Mtn Lion 10.8.2. They are hooked up to a wifi network via Time Capsule. TC appears to be working perfectly too, by the way. I even did a hard reset to be sure, and it didn't help. But the nice green light and green dots in Airport Utility are there.

Any help is much appreciated.

3 comuters connected wirelessly. I can plug one in to TC to answer your second question, but it's a little hard to check since the problem is so intermittent. It's working right this second, for example, and sometimes it works on one computer and not on another at the same time.

TC is using version 7.6.3, but I don't recall upgrading the firmware any time recently - not in the last few days when this issue started anyway. TC can't upgrade its firmware by itself, can it?

I'll roll back to 7.6.1, and will see how that goes.

Time Capsule is 2 weeks past my 90 days free phone tech support 😉 (found out when ringing Apple today) so about 3 months old.

Model is A1409.

Thanks.

Update:

Partner and I both got home from work and surfed the net for about 15 mins until the internet stopped working on both MacBooks pretty much at the same time. Apple Mail also couldn't find server, and iPhones (on same wifi network) also give the message "you are not connected to the internet". Checked iMac (plugged directly into Time Capsule via ethernet), and it has the same problem.

I'm currently writing this from my iPhone on 3G, and now it's the weekend so I'm extra annoyed.

Any ideas?

Did you reboot the TC?

Describe exactly how you are getting internet.. so far you haven't described the rest of the network..

Cable modem or adsl.. actual model number helps.

Is the TC the main router or bridged?

From Mountain Lion there is next to nothing you can do with the v6 utility.. there is no access to the log..

Can you please load 5.6 utility onto a computer.. from there we have some hope to see what is happening.

How to load 5.6 into ML.

1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.

2. Download and install unpkg.

http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/

Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.

You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

Didn't mean to say thanks with a question mark, sorry. I spoke too soon. Just plugged iMac into modem so I could get the 5.6 utility, and after working for a minute, the internet dropped out again. Lights on the modem indicate that it's functioning properly, but since the internet isn't working I guess there is something wrong with the modem.

TBC after I call Optus for troubleshooting.

Mar 7, 2013 11:19 PM in response to Carson Cox

Modem is ADSL provided by Optus - Sagem Fast 1201 V2. It is working well as far as I can tell. When I plug the computer directly into the modem (bypass router) it works.

The sagem is a great little modem.. So you have bridged it and are using pppoe client on the TC.. that is the only way that the TC is the only router on the network.

I would recommend swapping around.. run the sagem as router.. and bridge the TC. see how that goes.

I am very unconvinced the pppoe works reliably on the TC.

I am a bit lost how you are doing what you are doing.. if the modem is bridged you couldn't just plug something into it.

Run it as router anyway.. when I said it was a great modem.. that also implies it is less than 3years old.. all domestic stuff has a lifespan.. modems are particularly suspectible to heat.. and to voltage spikes on the phone line.. from lightning.

Check the TC .. as I think you are running double NAT.. and that can mess things up.

Edit.. posting too fast.. yes, 4years old and a modem is basically dead meat. Or at least its power supply will be.

Where in Aus are you??

You can buy modems at any large computer store.. officeworks on price match. Not a great range but you can buy day and night virtually 7days a week.

Big computer stores also have them cheap.. umart, msy.. etc.

The utility is airport utility for setup up and keeping track of the TC or any apple router. The earlier one simply is better.

I am currently plugged into the Sagem via ethernet, and the net is working. So the phone line goes from wall to modem, and then modem connected to computer with ethernet. Should it not work that way? Anyway, but as I said it's dropping out intermittently now.

I'm in NSW. So you recommend buying a new modem straight away, not troubleshooting it first? I'm assuming if I'm having the same issue when not using TC (or any other router) at all then there's definitely something wrong with the modem?? I'm currently on hold with Optus with up to 30 mins wait.

There is a chance that I set up TC incorrectly. Networking (all of this) really makes no sense to me. But if it has been the same setup for 3-4 months, wouldn't I have had problems the whole time - not just the past 3 days?

You have been running double NAT.. if you simply plug a computer into the modem and it works.. double NAT can work well for a while and then fall over.. it is hard to guess. But it is wrong setup as two routers leads to issues.

But if the modem is now dropping out.. open the modem setup gui.. and go to the log page. .and see what is in the log.

It is unlikely to be optus. And Optus are generally not very helpful to tell you if they have a problem.

The best place to look for current optus connection issues is whirlpool.

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/15

If there is a major issue you will see plenty of people posting.. I don't see much at the moment. .just the standard grumbling.

A new modem is the only way to test if it is a failed modem.. and a new one is about $100 or less.. so it is no big outlay.. you don't want or need an optus one.. just buy a standard modem.. Netgear DGN2200 not my favourite but should be ok.

You can post your line stats if you like that will help me see how good or bad your line is.

Mar 8, 2013 1:15 AM in response to LaPastenague

Yeah, I didn't expect Optus to admit any fault, but hoped they'd help troubleshoot the modem. They basically pointr out how old it is and suggested I get a new one. They said it could be the phone socket and suggested plugging into another one in the house to check. The Netgear modem you mentioned is actually one they support, so I will grab one tomorrow I think. $80 from Optus including shipping, or I can look somewhere else. Anyway, thank you for your help. Fingers crossed the new modem solves the problem! And then I'll fix my other router settings as per your advice.

Update:

Woke up Saturday morning, used the net to price modems online before heading out the door to buy one. Internet worked for a few minutes and then went away - same old story. I grabbed the house phone to call an Optus store to see if they had a modem in stock, and guess what...no dialtone, just a lot of static. I called Optus, they did a line check, and finally (!!!) they found a fault in the phone line.

After days of dealing with the internet going in and out, troubleshooting one computer, then the network (TC first) and finally blaming the old modem...it was the phone line all along! I had no reason to think it was the phone line because every time I picked up the phone during this mess, it worked perfectly. I was pretty annoyed when they told me it would be fixed any time between Saturday and the end of March 😠 but they did it today 😎!

So, LaPastenague, just wondering if you can point me in the direction of something online that tells me how to fix the double NAT situation so it doesn't cause problems in the future. I don't want you to write me a manual or anything, but if you can send me link that will help, it'd be much appreciated. Or, if it's too complicated without knowing a lot more about my existing setup, just let me know and I will investigate myself...or phone a friend.

Anyway, thanks for your help.

There isn't a lot of neat tutorials online..

Whirlpool has a bit of info.. but Apple routers don't do what most do.. so it is kind of different.

Apple manuals are like kiddies picture books.. you almost expect to see pictures of tin cans and string.

So we go from over simplistic to over complicated.

Basics is easy .. don't use no double NAT.. (to use a grammar rule)

If the modem is bridged.. then the TC has to use PPPoE client (for adsl at least).

If the modem is doing router.. then the TC has to be bridged.. (that is router bridge.. not to be confused with wireless bridge). Apple routers are simple to set this up.. because you simply choose bridge in the network areas.

email me and I have a pdf of how to bridge the sagem modem I did for someone.
